I have got myself in a really bad situation.

Recently our one year old lost her elderly friend. We'd always intended to get another piggie for her when this happened and she was feeling lonely, so we got her an 8 week old baby and after a bit of chasing, they have bonded well.

The problem I have is we have only ever had short haired/abyssinian piggies. The new one is long haired and since she arrived I'm struggling with my asthma, particularly after handling but also just being in the same room. I'm pretty sure it's nothing else. I have never been allergic to any of our other piggies. A long time ago, I was allergic to cats but this is no longer a problem. Even with antihistamines which I take for hayfever, my asthma is still flaring up.

Up to now they have been in the kitchen so I can keep an eye on whether they are bonding okay. In the summer they would normally live outside but in the autumn/winter I was planning for them to go in the conservatory and when it gets very cold, the kitchen (I would keep them in the kitchen all the time but we are pushed for space).

I don't know what to do.

It's not the new baby's fault and I don't want to get rid of her. My children are upset as they are really attached to both of them and are also still getting over losing our old piggie. Has anyone ever had this problem? I don't want to break them up, but maybe taking the long haired one to a rescue and coming back with a short haired one is an option. This seems very mean. Alternatively, I could stay as hands off as possible with the long haired one, but this is difficult when there's only me who would be able to trim her and clean them out. I could make sure they stay in the conservatory and provide heat pads etc in the winter but we would all miss the extra interaction with them in the kitchen.

Does anyone have any ideas please? I'm really not sure what's best for them.

That is such a shame for you and not something you could have known before you got her.
My partner's asthma is triggered by my guinea pigs and the hay irritates his skin. When I go away (about every 4-6 weeks) he looks after them and cleans them out everyday. He finds wearing long sleeves, a mask, gloves, taking anti histamines and completely changing his clothes and having a bath when he's finished helps.
I hope you can find a way to keep her but your health has to come first.

Sorry that you’re having this problem.
Can you take antihistamines and see if that helps ?
