Hi Guys

Naboo's cage is clean and dry. He is eating, squeaking for food, eating hay, drinking water and binkying.

However he has not had diorrhea but he has a messy bum. Not wet just really dirty and a bit matted. The vet said he was a lazy boy and laughed it off ad said not to bath them often but I bathed him today as it was grossing me out and he hated it. He has no sore skin just matted hair round his bottom and glands.

I wanted to cut it off but scared of cutting his tail off. The piggie shampoo didnt take hardly a quarter of the dirt off.

what should I do :(

Guinea Pigs don't have tails, so no worries there. I would carefully trim the hair around his bum, and try some dish soap on the more stubborn dirty areas (also can be used for the grease gland ). Just be sure it doesn't have any bleach in it :)

He may have a blocked grease gland. This is just above the 'tail' bone area. And usually looks brown like coloured. It can be cleared using swarfega or washing up liquid. Post up a picture and we may be able to tell you either way. If he is sitting in his wee constantly it may be that he either has painful joints or isnt feeling great. He will need cleaning if this is the case otherwise he will get urine scolding.

Sounds to me like a dirty grease gland. Follow advice above - and if your vet doesn't recognise a grease gland, get a more cavy savvy vet...

I clean my boars' with swafega or washing up liquid, but some boars need cleaning more than others. A healthy gland is a bald spot about the size of a penny, and may be dark skinned or pink. If you rub it gently you should feel some of the dirt forming a small ball which can be removed. This is a sure sign that it is grease.

However, if genuine loose poop, then you need to check:

possibly too much early grass if you have had him out for more than two hours a day in this gorgeous weather - piggies need limiting on this
possibly too much lettuce - lettuce should be fed only occasionally, as it is known to cause diarrhoea
possibly tooth problems - loose poop can be an early indicator that the back teeth are overgrowing. This needs to be seen to quickly to nip in the bud. If in doubt, get checked out by a cavy savvy vet
