I was just looking at guiseppe and noticed his teeth are brown on the tips.Ive never noticed it before so they can't have been like it long.I'm just wondering if it's normal or not?15587782474028393595913649177809.webp

Has your boy eaten something that could have discoloured the teeth? If the stain remains, then have the teeth checked the next time you see a vet.

Has he been chewing on anything brown or dirty? Mine can temporarily look a bit grubby when they’ve just had grass time or when they have been chewing on their carrot cottages or log arches

Saskias guinea pigs has a video on this. She sais its common in older pigs. But i cant remember why.

Is it me or are his teeth mis alligned?

He was on the grass for about half an hour yesterday late afternoon.Could that cause it?

I was also thinking misalignment.
My piggies’ teeth appear much shorter also. Mine munch on food all day and grinding their teeth.

With all due respect to Saskia's knowledge, but we haven't seen a lot of it on this forum in over a dozen years and have hardly had any questions about incisor tip discolourations. I have definitely never seen it any of my own oldies.
So it can't be that common in well kept piggies as we have had thousands of piggies of all ages pass through here in over a dozen years and get a fairly good snapshot as to which problems are the most common and which aren't. ;)

There is a very slight misalignment, which IS actually fairly common, but since it doesn't impact on the the self sharpening process, it is of no concern.

I think with saskia, she is seeing alot of neglected pigs, not saying gems pig is neglected because he obviously and cleary isnt. I can respect that you have had and still have a lot of pigs, so you would know if anyone if it was common👍

@Gem789 's boy is very well cared for, I assure you!

But if it is a dental problem, then a vet is better poised to judge whether it is a mineral or vitamin deficiency if it is not just a temporary discolouration.

Saskia sees literally thousands of piggies as the only guinea pig rescue in the second largest US city, and the majority come from less than pristine backgrounds while we are a place for people that on the overwhelming side aspire to give their piggies the best of care, so our experiences differ. Access to good vets is not only much more expensive and requires upfront payment in the US; exotics vets and general vets with decent guinea pig knowledge are also a lot harder to come by because there are a lot less compared to the UK or Europe.
Attitudes to pets and especially guinea pig needs/welfare are still lagging much behind compared to the UK where there is a continuously growing awareness of animal welfare and much more of an acceptance of companionship and somewhat larger cages, especially in the younger generation.
Although in California pet shops are now forced to sell second-hand guinea pigs and not babies in order to get on top of the flood of unwanted pets that in many cases will have to be otherwise euthanised.

Because of the high vet cost in a country where many people cannot even afford medical care for themselves and where a large proportion of citizens live from one weekly wage slip to the next, Saskia is aiming at a very different segment of the market than our forum. In contrast to her, we emphatically encourage our members to seek veterinary care considering that we have generally much better access to vet care, guinea pigs are much more common pets and that vet care is still a lot cheaper in the UK compared to other countries like the US, Canada or Australia.
It is important to keep the different background and audience in mind when watching her videos; they do not necessarily translate directly.
Saskia is also very much aiming at the home treatment and self-diagnosing sector with her videos on guinea pig care; she comes from a Rodentology background as she has European roots.

Our forum is a safe haven especially for a growing number of people with anxiety etc. problems and who are looking for understanding and ongoing support and reassurance and who are aiming to be the best possible. Our guides are very comprehensive and detailed, which appeals to people who have the need to get everything absolutely right. We try to promote a good standard of care in line with UK welfare recommendations and best rescue practice.
Saskia and our forum are both answering a growing but very different need.

Gem if you do decide to watch saskias video then cool. I only mentioned it just incase it does help until you see a vet 👍. Might not even be the same problem. Id rather tell you than not bother and then it could have helped.

This isnt a dig at anyone atall by the way✌

I would think this will be caused by grass x Sometimes my boys teeth look dirty if they have been out chewing grass and dandelions. Once they are inside for a day or so they are back to pearly white x

@SkyPipDotBernie please don’t take as gospel what you see on the internet. Please be aware that UK rescue standards and health and welfare standards are the ones we apply. I have now seen several videos from rescues and their key workers that I would not want being recommended on this forum including the current obsession with play dates that is causing so many members to join with fractured relationships a result of play dates with their friends’ piggies.

Not at all. Just with so much stuff available on the internet we have to be careful what we share and promote. We know you are well meaning and trying to help.
