Hiya one of my piggies has been producing some discharge from her eye for 24 hours now. It’s mainly white but with some clear discharge too. I know the white stuff is lubricant. But she’s never produced it in just one eye before, I will bathe the eye and then suddenly she produces more. She’s not squinting or anything. can anyone offer any advice at all? X

If you’re not sure there’s no harm in getting her seen by the vet at some point. Does the eye look okay from the outside - no squinting, redness, crusty etc?

Hello,
Anything to do with guineapigs eyes has the potential to be serious.

My pig had what appeared to be a scratch on his eye which was looking cloudy. I took him to the vets within 48hrs.

To my amazement the pig sat still and calm. The vet examined his eye and actually swept around the back of it - there it was... an enormous grass seed! The pig did not flinch, he knew he needed help. Afterwards I treated him with oral antibiotics, eye gel lubricant and painkillers as supplied by the vet. 5 days of super long snuggle times he was back to his usual character.

Sounds like something is getting to her... it could be one of her own hairs irritating her eye that’s super fine. A tepid warm eyebath may help sooth and expel any imposter, if at the very least keep it clean until seen by a vet. Are her claws in need of a nip too? The back ones are favourites for scratching eyes and ears in my experience. Good luck.

Hiya! Thank you so much. I took her within 48 hours of the discharge starting and she has a mild eye infection with potentially the start of an eye ulcer. She likes to stick her head in the hay rack so the vet believes this has caused it. She’s on eye drops twice a day and will be checked again end of this week ! Thank you for your reply glad your little one is better xx

Aw that’s so good to hear! Yeh- the prospect of an eye ulcer is horrendous so I’m pleased your little ball of fur is being treated. From what I have read , guineapigs have poor near vision so sticking her head in the hay makes sense. Wishing her heaps of popcorning happiness and get well wishes ☺️
