I've have a sow that's around 6 years old, she's been wet on her backside, so I asked my Son to take her to the vet where he said it was either a UTI or stones. Would it be normal for a sow to have a white discharge from her private area with a UTI?

She's on antibiotics, 2ml twice a day and we've been giving her probiotics 1 - 2 hours after, I'm usually good with knowing what's going on with guinea's, but this discharge has me stumped. My son's just given her a bum bath and wiped her.

Thanks in advance

when my piggie coco had a white discharge from her genitalia ,she had pyometra inection of the uterus.but you can get a bad infection of the bladder.i hope your piggie gets better soon.x

I’m sorry to say when Mabel had something similar to this she, too, had pyometra which is a nasty womb infection. Hopefully the ABs will shift it for her x

@Kerrie74

Please have her seen by a vet within the next 2 days. Pyometra (infection of the womb lining) can be easily cleared up with an antibiotic in the early stages, but it will kill if caught too late. It is not quite uncommon in older sows or new mums (the latter usually in not the best circumstances). Your vet may want to check whether there is an issue with the womb or an ovarian cyst.

She was seen @Wiebke previous to me posting. She's on antibiotics. I thought she may have cysts so had her scanned but it was all clear, this was before she started to have her current problem.

No more discharge, she had it the once when my Son cleaned her up and he's been checking her when he gives her meds. She's still got a wet bottom but it's not as wet as it was before. We made the mistake of taking her off the antibiotics when we saw her bottom was dry the last time, won't be making that mistake this time. The vet didn't state how long she should be on the medication, she's also been having probiotics 1 - 2 hours after the antibiotics.

If the vet hasn't said anything specific, it means that you are supposed to use up the medication given. ;)

@Wiebke Do you think Sulfatrim would be more effective? My Son's going to take Nattie back to the vets because her bottom is still wet and she really doesn't look happy, still no discharge which I'm assuming is a good sign? She's eating and drinking fine from what we've seen, my Son's been weighing her, she has lost a little bit of weight.

You could get him to ask about Sulfatrim but the vet may want to finish the Baytil first. My Maud was on Sulfatrim when she had a wet bottom but her issues were more bladder related. It did result in her having a spay though as the infection tracked to her womb.
