Hello!

A couple of weeks ago I noticed Stig left eye was a little puffy on the bottom and when he cleaned white discharge came out and it smelled so he went to the vets and was told his third eyelid had become infected and was given drops for 5 days. At this vet trip I took both piggies and he said they were otherwise perfect :)

After 5 days I noticed Stig's eye still looked puffy but it was not seeping and he was perfectly happy and therefore decided to keep an eye on him.

However yesterday he had some more white discharge when cleaning BUT he is playing normally, not become any more lethargic, eating and is very excited for feeding times still. We called a vet and they said to just clean his eyes with cooled down boiled water and watch for any changes. Today both his eyes seeped white stuff but whenever I clean them it has mostly cleared up except maybe for a little dampness). He is still normal and has not changed.

Should I be concerned or just keep an eye on him?

I must admit since I lost a piggy in July I am very paranoid and tend to worry too much over nothing ")

Thanks

Hi, piggies eye cleaning fluid is white, see this topic on Guinea Lynx (an excellent medical site from USA) http://www.guinealynx.info/eyes.html There is a photo under the heading 'Eye Discharge' Does it look like that?

I would get him back to a cavy savy vet just to make sure it is not a lingering infection, you can search for one near to where you live by using our Recommended Vets Locator http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/locator/vets.html

Yes it does. I don't think it could be still infected as everyone who has looked at the eye says it looks the same as the unifected one, I think at times I am just worrying too much. If it still has not cleared tomorrow I might seek advice from another vet but in all honesty looking at his eye it does look fine, it is not constantly seeping, it is bright and clear and he is closing or squinting it and he loves his eye baths so it is certainly not sensitive to touch. Am I just being overprotective?

My only concern would be the vet saying it would be infected in the first place... Without seeing the eye it is impossible to tell.

Milky discharge that is not present all the time would at first sound to me like cleaning fluid. No cloudyness on the eye? Any swelling? etc..?

He was diagnosed face to face :) we had advice over the phone afterwards :)
