Yep thats right, I had no intention of breeding. I have always kept boars in pairs in jan i lost one of my boars and the remaining one just never got used to being alone, I waited and deliberated but then decided to try him with a baby boar. Intros were a success and he was very happy. It then occurred to me that since he was 4 years older than the new baby I could be faced with the same dilemna in a few years. Well we had the space and love pigs so we went ahead and got 1 more again careful intros were made and the trio seem to get onlike a house on fire but now what. The new one has been with them 3 weeks and is most likely pregnant. I am planning on bringing her inside away from the boars near to delivery and subsequently neutering my existing boars. Like i said i have plenty of room and can keep any sows after the neutering and already know of friends who would gladly home boars. So any obvious flaws in my plan that leap out at those of you more experienced than i. Will mum and daughters happily live with 2 neutered boars. Any advice please

I have 5 girls with 1 boy. It was 2 boys but one just got PTS. They all live together really well and did when it was 2 boys. Get the boys neautered now as by the time babies come along they will be ok to see them without the worry of getting the little ones or mum pregnany again. xx

Thanks for replying I will be sure to not allow another litter it's just my little boar is only about 10 or 11 weeks and I'm sure i read somewhere they need to be 4 months to neuter. Is this right? I figured I may aswell take the boys together when they go and gestation time would allow for him to be of age,.Is there any chance mum will not want to have her daughters around the boys and live as amixed herd? I am only familiar with boars and didn't know whether new mums could be overprotective.

Sorry to bombard all with ? but this is all new to me and want to do right by all pigs.

Also forums are a complete new thing for me and some abbreviations and initials go right over my head .My initial reply mentioned PTF or TPF can't remember without checking and I am Clueless as to what this is I'm very much a dino when it comes to writing my 7 year old daughter had to tell me what LOL meant

my boys were just under 4 months. My vet went by weight and not age. Sorry i put PTS means put to sleep. I am the same with abbreviations but you will soon pick it up. x

So sorry to hear that and sure i will get the hang eventually, I noticed that when i put multiple ? meaning questions a smiley face appeared. Boy does this stuff make me feel old along with the fact my daughter who deems the sow to be hers is gleefully telling everyone I am going to be a grandma to pigs.

my vet won't castrate Smudge until he's 6month old & he was living with his sister until he was 11 wks old as smudge was supposed to be a girl. Coco isn't showing any signs of getting fatter so hopefully he hadn't had his evil way with her, although it's not for want of trying!! It's my birthday next week & when my hubby asked me what I wanted I replied 'a large shed & 15 guinea pigs 'I'm sure you can guess what his answer was & it wasn't yes!! (maybe I should let Coco get pregnant)

welcome to the forum from me and the girls in oz :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: i am not sure as it was years ago i bred piggies and not much was known but i think you are supposed to feed the mum to be a special diet, perhaps look in food section or pregancy and labour on the forum here. you could also take your little girl to the vet to see if she is indeed expecting and for anything special you need to be doing. O0 sending hugs and hopes she isn't pregnant and welcome again :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Yep well you do need to take the sow away from the boars immediately. Even if she isn't pregnant - and that goes for other members who believe they can keep sows & boars together for weeks on end - don't do it!! yes they do mate and yes they do get pregnant.

Males are capable of mating from 3 weeks onwards.

My only query with having 2 boars and a sow is that even if they're neutered, they may fight over her. The reason they haven't fought so far is that the young boar may be too young. However it can still happen. Neutered males and females can live together though, you just got to keep an eye on them
