Redemption is a Sheba Mini Yak, probably purebred, but maybe crossed with a Coronet as the hair on the top of his head is not quite as long as on a show variety. Other than that, he meets all of the other criteria, especially the big face and muttonchop whiskers. The woman's son (the woman who thought he was a hamster) did say her son was breeding the animals, so he obviously was or is breeding Sheba Mini Yaks hoping to make some money. Here is Red in a pic that I posted last year compared with a picture that belongs to someone in Australia whose name I do not know; I am just borrowing the photo for comparison.

Wow I have never heard of that breed. How sad his previous owners are breeding. I dread to think of how the piggies are being treated.

I've only seen one Sheba, as far as i know they are an Australian breed. Although living in Australia, they aren't really common. Gorgeous fur on them though!

Redemption is beautiful :)

Awwwww. Red is stunning. I have never heard of that breed though. Interesting.

Mini Yak is brilliant. Fantastic name. I had a Chocolate Agouti (RIP Carmina) and I thought that was the best one....but Mini Yak!

Awwww always nice to see a pigture of Red :)
I've never heard of that breed but am not clued up on the types of piggys at all so no real surprise there
I'm not clued, either. I was just "surfing" guinea pig pictures on the 'Net to show a visitor and suddenly I saw a bunch of them that looked just like Red. Reading the breed specs, I discovered they fit him perfectly, even to the description of the coat texture and the emphasis on the large face. Red never has looked like any of the other GPs I've seen. The ONLY difference between the show Mini Yaks and Red is that the little rockstar coronet on his head is just not as long, but the specs do say that it does not have to fall completely in their eyes. His eye spacing and face hair are to die for, as far as the show pigs go. If I did not keep him trimmed so short he would look like a tousled toupée with legs, just like the show pigs. Do a Dogpile search on "Sheba Mini Yak" and you will find out more than you ever wanted to know about them.

From what I've read, they are indeed Australian and indeed uncommon, a cross between some sort of Peruvian and Abyssinian that bred true. I don't know much about customs laws, but this being the military community that it is, it would not surprise me if someone got breeding stock from Oz and brought it back here on a military assignment, avoiding customs on a poorly-supervised military flight, or if they simply crossed the pertinent breeds here to get it.

And yes, with the dearth of care for "exotics" in this area, it is a pity and a shame that ANYTHING is being deliberately bred.

wow! i love sheba mini yaks, otherwise known as "bad hair day" cavys. some people say they are like a x between an Abyssinian & a Peruvian as they have rosettes over their body and it is long and wavy. i know they are quite rare, as i think they breed was on the verge of dying out, but are a lot more common in Australia than in England. lovely pics. i want one! :Ayociexp120:
