Hello,

I am struggling with my cage - its so damm untidy!

I have a CC cage, two levels and in one corner I have a box where I have created a door and inside it they have their dish for food, and hay rack. Water is in the other corner.

Every other day or so I clean and tidy the cage and EVERY TIME the box is disgusting with masses of poo's trodden on ...... mixed in with hay and wee ....

The entire cage used to get like this! Does anyone else have the same problem? and what do you do about it? Its coming summer and I am very busy with work etc and I just dont have time to stand over them, the smell is really not fun some days ;((

Hmm maybe put hay in a hay rack (so there's always a clean supply) and then put a tray in the bottom of the area (cat litter tray or anything similar) with hay etc in which can be easily changed/cleaned regularly.

Smelly pigs are not nice :( but hay trays have really helped in my cages. Hope this helps.

Make sure you have a hay rack and a bowl they cant knock over. I have a smallish bowl so they cant get in it and pee everywhere!:p
 
My piggies were insisting on peeing and pooing at the bottom of their ramp and it was causing a really bad smell. I have trimmed down a cat litter tray to fit around the bottom of the ramp and they have carefresh in that tray. they then urinate in there and it doesnt smell, i change that about every 5 days and just top up the tray once a day. the fleece then lasts about 2 weeks with spot cleaning daily. The smell is not bad at all, it used to be a problem.

By any chance do you have some pictures of your cage? I would love to see how you have handled it as I dont seem to have moved forward at all here ;(( only having to change ever 10-14 days would be amazing!

I dont have a C&C cage but i do have a cage that has an upper level. Ive lined the floor of the upper level with vinyl flooring so its easily wiped down. I keep all food on the upper level to reduce spillage and mess. Hay is kept in a hay rack and i use a cat litter tray underneath the hay rack to catch falling hay strands. The litter tray is filled with wood shavings and topped with a thin layer of hay - my girls are extremely clean and will do 80% of their mess in the litter tray - my boys however (especially my long haired boys) will drag the shavings and hay down to the bottom fleece area.

I currently use a mixture of fleece and vetbed and hoover up stray poops/hay/shavings once a day. I do a full cage clean every 3-4 days if using fleece and every 5-6 days if using vetbed.

I too would love to know the secret behind carolinem's cage :)) wow if i could get away with fortnightly cleanups that would be awesome. Ive been using fleece for nearly 12months now and cannot get it to last any longer than 6 days between changes before it starts to smell.... (i use washable bed pads underneath my fleece and these have a liquid absorbancy of 3litres!)

36hrs and my boys' fleece stinks...
 
They have a two tier c+c that has an L shaped upper tier, the lower tier is lined with mattress protectors and fleece, the ones you can get on ebay that are about £8 each, in a 2x3 i need 1.5 in the bottom so i have three (one chopped in half). The upper tier has their hay tray, previous to this they used to live in a single tier, they used to use their hay tray as a litter box too but now the hay is upstiars they are lazy, hence the tray at the bottom of the ramp with carefresh in, they also have another corner litter tray with carefresh in, they seem to like the two corners i have put the trays in the most and thats why they are there. The only problem with my cage is that i find it very fiddly to change the fleece, hence why i try and make it last as long as possible!:)

Sorry if I've misunderstood you, do you have a water bottle for your piggies to drink from or is it just water in a bowl?
Bottles are easier and quite cheap, and could solve some of your problems?
Guinea pigs can be very clumsy and a bit messy, if they've got a bowl of water they will end up walking in it/knocking it over/spilling stuff in it, which of course will make the whole place smellier and damper..

Idealistically, you could scrape out the worst of the ick each day and only do a big clean out every 5 days or so.
 
Yes they have a water bottle, positioned over there litter tray in an attempt to keep that cleaner...

I hope these photos work, I last changed the fleece in the bottom on tuesday last week (12 days ago), I will probably change it again tomorrow.

Have you tried litter trays ? My two sets of boys have them and they do all wee's in there - poops tend to go a bit more astray sometimes but the pens (I have C&C too on three levels) stay relatively tidy. I poop scoop thoroughly twice a day, empty and clean the litter trays and do full deep clean out every 3-4 days. We use fleeces for the boys, the girlies have vet bed. Haven't got around to cutting the new vet bed for the boys yet (still rolled up in the store cupboard mallethead)
