Hi all,

My two guinea pigs recently got diagnosed with a parasite/worm in their body that needs to be treated and the vet said that the parasite/worm was probably something the piggies already came with and it's not something that I was feeding them, but I was just wondering if I should disinfect their cage and their hideys or not (if it's not necessary).

I'm also wondering if anyone has any tips when it comes to syringe feeding your guinea pig since my piggies hate the medicine and I'm kind of struggling to get my piggies to eat all of the medicine. I've also never needed to syringe feed my guinea pigs anything before so it's really new to me.

Any information would be great!

~Thanks~

It is probably a good idea to disinfect to be safe. If they have intestinal parasites the medicine should fix the problem but keep them extra clean for now invade they are shedding eggs in droppings

There is a guide on here somewhere about how to syringe. You need to go in at the side of the mouth behind the front teeth and angle the syringe into the back cheek not directly down the throat. Try practicing using a little water instead of the medicine first

I second @PigglePuggle 's advice.

Here is a useful video for syringing: Syringe Training Before The Need For Medicating

If this doesn't work, this hold here can do the trick. It limits the mobility of the head and allows you to control it with your thumb and index further.

Use our piggy whispering tips to gently assert your authority before you medicate and reassure your piggy with plenty of piggy kisses and praise throughout and immediately after.
