Hello, I have a guinea called Emily which is around 3 1/2 years old. She dropped weight so we took her to the Vet. They told us she had dental problems, reason why she wasn't eating. I believe the Vet trimmed her teeth down, this was two weeks. I've been syringe feeding her 13ml, 3 times a day. On 31 March she was 600g now she is 520g, so I rang the Vet today to see if I was underfeeding or anything I can do, because she's at a decline. The Vet said she had a dislocated Jaw, they're unable to fix it, Vet implied the situation is do I forever syringe feed her or put her down. She sniffs food but doesn't want it and she was underweight when she had the operation and survived, so I believe she's a fighter.

Her current situation isn't great, Underweight, Hunched posture, Slow to respond.

I'm posting on this forum for information, Does having a dislocated Jaw mean it cant be fixed? Is there anyway to treat this or Is it more humane to put her down?

Is the any way you can make it to the cat and rabbit clinic in Northampton? I know it's a long way away but Simon Maddock and his wife Kim who run the practice are the most experienced vets in this country when it comes to dentals and can give you advice on a dislocated jaw x

I can vouch for them, they are fantastic vets. My Ted has dental problems and we take him up there from Fornwall every 6-8 weeks. They really know what they are doing when it comes to guinea pigs and especially dental issues. If you can get there it would be the best outcome for your little piggie x

Possibly, I'm free to travel to Northampton. It would take 2 hours, I don't mind travelling that far.

Sorry I don't know much about teeth & dentistry, but is she on any painkillers (loxicom)?

If she's in pain (dislocated jaw sounds painful!) she'll probably lose her appetite & common symptoms of pain are hunched in corners & hair all sticking out :(

Have you tried hand feeding a few blades of grass at a time?
Does she have damp dishcloth smelling breath (possible oral thrush)?

Try ringing the cat & rabbit first thing.

Did your vets dislocate her jaw when trimming her teeth?

Good luck & fingers crossed for Emily xx

The Vet gave us, Metacam to give to her after Operation. I was giving it to her week after the operation but have since stopped, Should I keep giving it to her?

It is a possibility the vet dislocate her Jaw when doing the operation. I ask my Mum what the Vet did, She didn't give much information. They might of had to fix an issue in the back of mouth.

Definitely try and get an appointment to see Simon Maddock at Cat and Rabbit Clinic. You've only got tomorrow and Thursday though, as he's off from Good Friday and not back in work until week beginning 20th April.

I can pretty much guarantee that the jaw isn't dislocated. I've lost count of the number of times where owners have been told that, but instead the jaw is pushed so far out of alignment, due to overgrowth of teeth, not allowing the jaw to slide side to side smoothly. If you can get to see Simon, I think your piggy will definitely have a chance.

Sadly many vets have very limited expereince with guinea pig dental issues.
Getting her seen by Simon or Kim is the best way to be sure she gets a proper diagnosis and treatment.
We have had many members over the years who have been told their guinea pig has problems and can't be treated, only to have the miraculously saved by an experienced vet.
To be honest a dislocated jaw sounds very unlikely - maybe the vet meant the jaw was misaligned?
But either way I hope you can get her seen soon.

Definitely keep giving her the metacam. It's supposed to be given twice a day. What dose is she on and is it cat or dog metacam?

Sorry for the late reply, went to feed the pig. I've been given Metacam for Cats and Guinea pigs. The Vet has left a sticker on it, 0.1Ml by mouth once a day

Yeah I'll ring him tomorrow.. I don't know if I'm feeding her enough though, Feeding her 13ml three times a day is enough?

That's a very low dose especially as cat metacam is 3 x lower strength than dog metacam. Ring them at 8 in the morning if you can when they open. Let us know how you get on x

I think I'd be inclined to give her some Metacam tonight as she has recently been prescribed it-that's if you have some left, then speak to Simon or Kim tomorrow morning. ask if you can up the dose & make it twice daily (Guinea pigs have a fast metabolism so medications usually wear off before the 24hrs are up).

There are a lot of members who have had an excellent experience with the cat & rabbit clinic.

Hope you can get her sorted, fingers & paws all tightly crossed here for her

I've given her 0.2Ml this evening, 0.1ml an hour ago and 0.1ml now. Ill keep feeding her tonight, hope I can get her booked in tomorrow. Thanks for the help

I usually try to even out the doses so they're about 12hrs apart, but ask Simon what he recommends in the morning :tu:

Hopefully she'll be more comfortable overnight
X

Did you manage to give them a call today? x
unfortunately I had left it too late, Emily sadly passed away today. She was lying on her side around 7am and Passed around 10Am.

It's fine, this wasn't unexpected. I've had multiple guinea pigs and this is the first one with dental problems. I could of handled it better but you learn from it. Now i've got the one sister on her own, might get a bit bored.
