You may remember last week Disney seemed to be wet around her bum and sore with it. I carried on bathing her and she seemed ok, still munching away but this morning after I bathed her she wheeked while peeing. I took her straight to the vets and she has a water infection.

She has had metacam and has a weeks supply of baytril, and has been a really good girl and had her medicine tonight :)

I feel so guilty, she looks well and has not gone off her food, I am a bad mummy :(

You are not a bad mummy! you noticed she wasn't right and took her to get treatment. Hope she's soon on the mend. Have you tried offering unsweetened cranberry juice?

It is cystitis/UTI season and probably worse this year because of the big shifts in temperature we are having this spring. The beginnings of cystitis are not always as obvious to somebody who hasn't experienced it before.

Make sure that you give her as much unsweetened cranberry juice (if necessary mixed with water) or just water to flush her bladder. Ocean Wave light is widely available in bigger supermarkets.

It may take more than one course of baytril to clear the cystitis. Make sure that you give probiotic to buffer the guts from the harsh effects of baytril.

Here is more information about UTI:

Thanks guys, this is the first sick piggie I have had :( She is fine with me but bit my dad yesterday and drew blood, perhaps she just wants her mum :)

I will defo be getting the cranberry juice tomorrow, do I syringe the cranberry juice?

She takes the Baytril like one of my kids, she pulls the most awful face :(

The vet has suggested that if she is no better in 7 days then she may need to do an ultra-sound/x-ray to check for stones ............... is this very common?

Firstly you are not a bad mummy, you have done the right thing.
Secondly, one of my piggies currently has possible bladder stones so we are having an xray tomorrow to see what is going on. From what I have read, heart/kidney problems are quite common in piggies and also bladder stones. If it is bladder stones then my piggy will be going for the operation to remove them and then on the ratewatchers diet, which from what i can gather is a low calcium diet (i think the calcium is what causes the stones in the first place).
Good luck mummy and disney xx
Love from Amy, Yorkie and Dave the piggies. xx

Disney is looking nice and bright this morning, now going to give her a little soak to keep her clean as the pee has made her a little sore :(

Thanks Amy, hope everything goes well at the vets for your piggie today xoxo

Don't feel guilty - she's getting treatment, she's in a loving home, and she's generally ok despite the symptoms you mentioned. Try not to worry yourself, take things as they are and just take one step at a time. :)

Good to hear she's on both anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, the former can make all the difference!

Just ensure she is drinking well, and if there's any signs of hair loss or sore skin around her genitals then Bepanthen (nappy rash cream) is a good one to soothe and protect the skin.

I've put the girls out in the run for an hour this morning, Disney is nibling away and I'm sure I even saw her popcorn :<> fingers crossed she is on the mend :<>

Unfortunately Yorkie passed away yesterday :( he went for the xray and stopped breathing after 5mins of being under the GA for the xray :( He had a bladder stone and they were about to operate to remove it 8... 8...

I really hope Disney is on the road to full recovery, i am thinking of you and Disney xx

Love from Amy and a very lonely piggy, Dave. xx

I did read about your loss Amy and was so sad to hear about Yorkie, my heart really goes out to you as I do not know what will happen if Disney does have bladder stones. I too will have to make some difficult decisions.

Thinking of you and Dave.

I am glad that Disney looks like she is on the mend!

Well, if it had been picked up sooner (from my old vets) i bet he would've had a better chance of survival. But they just brushed him off saying he was going to die and it was a tumour. I went to a new vets and they sorted him out straight away but unfortunately he must have become so weak, his body couldn't cope with the anaesthetic. so please please please make sure your vet is a reputable cavy savy vets and please get your piggy sorted as soon as possible. Bladder stones are not necessarily life threatening, unfortunately for Yorkie they were :( .

I am thinking of you and Disney, best of luck xx

I am pleased to say Disney is defo looking better, a few more days of Baytril to go but her bottom area is looking so much better, the Bepantham cream is defo doing the job there :))

I am so pleased :))

Glad she is on the mend, hope she makes that full recovery in the next few days. :)
