Hes very quiet, the last few days hes spending alot of time in his sleeping area, his eye is runny yet no sign if a uri or eye injury. His bottom felt damp tonight but no sign of any sores etc and his belly was gurgling could he have abit of bloat? Hes eating fine hea had a few of his pellets just now his hay as usual and tonight hes had spinach and cucumber.. I cant put my finger on it but he just doesnt seem right to me.. :( plus ive just got him out and he weed on me and it smelt really strong no blood or anything.. Think a vet visit is in order :( he is 4 now do you reckon this is just the downside of old age.. Advice please I'm worried about my sausage :'(
 
I don't think 4 is particularly old so you shouldn't have to worry about the effects of old age just yet.

Is he drinking well? If not, it might explain the strong smelling urine. Though the cucumber will help keep him hydrated in any case.

Feeling damp underneath can be a sign of a UTI - which could also explain the smell of the urine. Blood in the urine is not always visible, but can still be present. A dipstick would test for that.

If he hasn't been moving around much then it's likely that he's also been sitting in his urine which, again, could explain the dampness.

I'm sorry, I don't have any specific advice. You will know him well enough to know if something is up. I think you should trust your instincts and get him checked out at the vet. Better to be safe than sorry.

It sounds like it may be a uti, like jerrybelly says It can make wee smell funny and may be why he's a bit damp.
You say his tummy is a bit gurgly, can you here it from a distance or just close up? Is his tummy hard and hollow-sounding if you tap it?

It may be worth just massaging his tummy incase he is a little gassy.
I would definitely get him to the vets as soon as you can to get him checked out. x
 
If you're worried overly about bloat and gas and he's gurgling loads try infacol 2mls twice a day.. that sorts my lady right out because she has been so ill we've had her on cabbage/baby food every day to get her up to weight. My vet (who is awesome sauce) says he has never heard of a piggy become sick from infacol overdosing but have a chat with your vet as well as see if they can recommend for self diagnosing/medicating against bloat.

infacol is found in the baby isle - £2/3 a bottle.. my vet says it should belong behind the bathroom mirrorcabinet as a staple if you own guineapigs.

if he is in serious danger of bloat related problems I've been told to give 2mls infacol every 2 hours, along with 3mls of pineapple juice twice daily and emeprid (dosing dependent on weight of pig). That helps prevent stasis like no one business!

p.s. might want to up his fluids via syringe to monitor exactly at least how much fluids he's getting..

...sorry.. thats 2mls infacol every 2 hours assuming you start in the evening.. and finish at midnight. .. so 6, 8, 10, midnight.
 
Thanks all id never actually heard of bloat in pigs until a thread thr other day i heard his belly gurgle tonight during lap time, like that noise our tummy makes if were hungry.. His bottom wasnt wet just damp as though he had been sat in his wee ? :( hes moving around abit morenow though ? Just been and had a drink etc... Il keep an eye on him and get him to a vet if needs be, hes always been really welland healthy other than this eye issue so its a little worrying for me as hes not generally a sickly piggy x
 
I found my guineas eyes wept when she was in general poor health. It stimulated the other girl to come over and tend to her. Now that DT has passed on I spend a great deal of time 'grooming' Leeland's eyes affectionately. If you don't clean up the eye goop it may cement to the fur around the eye and of you try to pick it off when it's hard it pulls the hair out! Other guineas are the master of eye grooming, but as Ditto is a bachelor I would probably put in 2 minutes every now and then just cleaning up the eye gunk nice and carefully (with just a little tissue and warm preboiled water). Might make him feel tended to in the same way other guineas would.

p.s. soaking the eye is annoying for them, haha.. found that out the hard way! :P
 
Poor lad. Hopefully he's just got a little guinea pig man-flu and will perk up soon! Claws crossed.

As long as he's eating and passing normal poo you don't have a life-threatening bloat on your hands and he'll just be a bit uncomfortable, but if things stop moving it can be very dangerous. Mine have never had problems but I'm still very paranoid about watching out for it whenever they've had gassy veg! Keep us updated.

I feel awful thinking hes in ill health :0 he is kept clean and dry has unlimited veggys and hay and toys and attention mallethead i hate the thought hes unwell ...

Thankyou il keep an eye on him.. What would you class as gassy veggys -cabbage? Etc.. He had spinach last night is that gassy?
 
Gassy veg is things like cabbage, and anything in that family, just feed in moderation to avoid potential bloat. Hope dittos ok hun x

Cabbage, brocolli, sprouts etc. Not sure about spinach though, does he have it much? Just a thought he may disagree with it a bit. My Ruby has been a little gassy recently so we have kept her off veg for a few days, by the vets advice but we don't know what exactly caused the gas so it's just going to be trial and error to find what it is. x

He had spinach last night and that was the first time in a few weeks hes had spinach. He only ha a few small leaves and his stomah was gurgling like 2 minutes later so doubt it was the spinach working that quick x
