Just discovered something blood like in the pop-up Pig tent - we were getting very concerned when my son asked if they have periods. Ahem.....! (er, doh, didn't think of that).

Assume they do? Don't they? They are around 3 months old (give or take 2 weeks).

Thanks

No sows do not have periods. Are you sure it's blood? Don't want to sound patronising but sometimes if a piggie has eaten beetroot, carrot, etc. then it can change the colour of the urine. If you are sure it is blood then she needs to go to a vet asap. It could one of many things such as a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, etc. Hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure it was blood. It was on a white fleece from the bottom of a pop up tent. (Piggies go camping - yay!). I sniffed it. Didnt smell of poo. Had just cleaned out the hutch and all droppings normal. No goo.

I rang the vet and spoke to the nurse who asked if they had been fighting. There has been a bit of jostling for No. 1 position and a bit of sulking over the last few weeks but I usually find them curled up together (or one across ways on top of the other - though that could be dominant come to think of it....).

I put them in a pen with newspaper on the floor. Left them to it for a few hours. checked the paper - nothing put normal wee and normal poos. No blood colour - just soggy paper - a lot of it though. (though have never seem them pee on paper before and guess it just spreads).

I have washed the fleece, and when its dry tomorrow I will put them in the tent and see if I get it again.

It would have to be the weekend, wouldn't it!

If the pee continues as a normal colour, and there is no blood coming from either pigs rear end then just keep an eye out. Milly once had this, and I got all worried, but it appeared to be a very strange one off occurance. :{
Just keep a close eye

Like Starla says if it doesn't happen again then don't worry. Yes you are right, when piggies pee on paper it looks a lot more and it does spread.

Starla, thanks for that, so far, nothing else today!

RW3399, thanks for the confirmation that the pee goes much further on newspaper.

Hopefully the piggies are okay.

Some sows,occasionaly,can have a one off pinky colour discharge when on heat.This is fairly uncommon but it can happen.

Hopefully it won't happen again and you might never know what it was.

Keep us posted.
