Bramble and Herbert are both around a year old and living separately because they didn't get on after we tried to bond them, and a fight broke out!

Anyway, they are both very difficult to catch, to do health checks etc., and Herbert (especially) who we've had since March races all around the cage and will not let us pick him up, although we do eventually catch him, but it's always quite stressful for all of us! Bramble (Who we've had since last August) also still runs away, but usually into his box, so it's easier to catch him, and then he's always fine once he's out of the cage, but Herbert is a bit less happy about it!

So, as it's obvious through the bar biting and Bramble rumbling at Herbert (quite often throughout the day), that they're both quite hormonal and wound up, do you think it will be more likely that they will become easier to handle and more relaxed as they mature?

It's really difficult because sometimes I feel really bad as an owner, that they still seem so terrified of being picked up out of the cage, and sometimes I just long to be able to pick them up to give them cuddles/kisses, but it's virtually impossible to do that, so I just have to wait for the once a week health checks when we 'have' to get them out of the cage, and then the second time, when the cages are cleaned out.

Also, we do have an outside run for them which they have only been in a couple of times over the last two weeks, because it has either been too cool or too wet to put them in it. But we can't leave them out in it over night because it's just literally a run with no hutch attached, and it gets too cold and damp at night to leave them out, so we have to/will have to, , handle them every time they get put in the run, and then when we have to bring them back in again, and this could be potentially over a few days in a row if we are lucky and get a prolonged dry, warm spell. So they will/may get used to being picked up more then, I suppose, over time.

Boars do tend to mellow and become friendlier as they age but it doesn’t mean they will necessarily enjoy being handled any more.
My popcorn is 6 years old and over the last two years or so has become much more chilled out but he still doesn’t like being held. All of them have no choice but to tolerate handling for the essentials and for moving them back and forth from their run (you should never leave them out in a run ocernight even if a hutch is attached) but I don’t sit and cuddle them because they don’t like it.
All you can really do is follow their lead and see what happens

Dignified Sir George is quite happy to be picked up 50% of the time but has always enjoyed lap time. Master Boris makes a fuss every time but we do handle him daily because once he's out he settles immediately and over the last few weeks has decided that he really enjoys a cuddle and relaxes so much he now sleeps in our arms nearly every time.
I started by sitting on the floor with a fleece blanket over my legs and letting them climb on me, Sir George as a youngster quickly decided that my lap was a good place to curl up and have a little nap. When we adopted Master Boris I thought it would take him a while to come close but he was more than happy to clamber all over me from his first floor time. Even if this doesn't progress any further, it's delightful to have them do it.IMG20230619191017.webp

I wish we could have them out on the floor like you do but unfortunately we can't where we currently live. We are planning to change our living situation so it is possible to do this, in the not too distant future though! 🤞

We have recently used the hall as a run space and enjoyed sitting on the floor with the guinea pigs.
I have also blocked off a temporary 2x3 cc space with boxes (not grids)and me, I then used a pee pad on the floor, to enjoy time with them too. Just hand feeding veggies and hanging out with hay for 10mins. I would do this at weigh in time as then it became a more positive experience, not just a quick weigh in. Is that something you could do as an alternative?

I kept telling the boys “The floor is lava!” They still attempted a break out, but veggies soon changed minds. 🤣

If we get snuggly cuddles it’s a rare thing. Our piggies are always more interested in the veg or hay on offer.

Unfortunately, not. We literally live in a tiny place with a 'hall' just about big enough for two people to stand in, and there's nowhere else at all for them to free range. The outside space is a lot bigger than the inside space though, but their run has a lid, so again it's totally impossible to sit 'in' there with them. We will be able to change all of this in the (Hopefully not too distant) future though.....We are definitely working on it anyway! 🤞😉
