Ok, here is my dilema!

My piggy Dave, is impossible to pick up, and believe me we have tried. He isnt scared, he just doesnt like it. He doesn't squeek or anything, he is just very independent. He doesn't mind a tickle on the nose, and loves to chat and popcorn, but he just isnt the type to sit on my knee or enjoy cuddles. He is about 4 years old, but we have only had him about 4 months. He was somewhat neglected before he was rescued, but is a wee cheeky chappy now!

So my dilema is.....do i get another piggy? One, to keep him company when we are out in the day (he is an indoor piggy). And two because we would love to have a piggy that we can give cuddles, maybe he will learn from the new one etc?

I know its unlikley that i will find a suitable male that will fit in, so I am thinking about getting a female? But of course i will need to have Dave spayed, etc. If i get a younger one, is it easier to get them used to being handled? Otherwise if i get another rescue one, i could end up with two who hate being handled. Should i get Dave or the young female spayed? The female will be younger, which might be safer?

Don't take me wrong, i would never want to replace Dave, he is a happy little chappy, who loves to have free range around the lounge! And loves our company in the evenings! I just thought that he might be even happier with daytime company, and then we can also have a cuddly one!

Whatya think peeps? :D

Dave sounds lovely - although rather set in his ways, if he was never handled much before you got him he's just got used to it. It must feel odd for him to have someone try to pick him up!

The rescue is the best place to go - I would certainly get Dave a friend. They may already have a neutured female, if not, they can recommend a good vet as they probably have males neutured frequently. I totally understand you wanting a cuddly piggie, which is why a rescue is the best place to go - they will have lots of piggies to choose from. Also, if you take Dave along, he can pick out a new friend himself.

Good luck! O0

ooo i never thought of taking Dave along, thanks for the tip!

I called a rescue place yesterday, and she said that pretty much 100% of the piggy's she has in are never handled. Although she tries to handle them all, she has a lot and doesn't get time to spend with them. She rescue's all types of animals.

So thats one of the reasons I was thinking about getting a baby? So i could get them used to being handled right from the beginning? She does get rescue babies in too, but stragely, she hardly ever gets any females?! which i thought was a little strange?

:D

Yeah, people tend not to want males because of the risks of failed bonding.. females are always easier to rehome, too.

A baby would be a good idea then, if you wanted a piggie to cuddle. There's also a better chance of bonding an older boar with a baby boar. If the bonding fails there are side-by-side caging alternatives (I am an example of that).

There is lots of advice about bonding boars and living arrangements.
