Hi everybody,
just wanted to hear some of your opinions on this maybe;
Oki is 7and a half year now and I posted about him before when he had his leg problems..Now it seems to be getting worse,he has not walked since 3 days, does not seem to be in pain ,has his head up,and eating normally. Another problem is that he has a bit of mucus around his nostrils and was given an antibiotics for that, and that at least did not get worse I think, but his lips are not smooth anymore..
he seems to be "perky" ,gave me a nice little sqeak this morning..but I really dont know wether it's good to keep him going.I don't want to be selfish and him in pain is the least thing I want to. I have another appointment with my vet this afternoon and will ask her about mabye an anti-inflammatory course or something..buf if this fails, too I think we might have to put him down..Any advice ?
Thanks a lot, Frauke

I'm so sorry you have to think about this love. What is your gut instinct telling you? I really don't know, hopefully someone on here does. Can you discuss it with your vet?

I dont want to put him down obviously, but he seems to be weaker by the day,i will ask the vet later as well. :(

Could it be that he may fall into a forever sleep? If he's not in pain? I'm really not sure what to suggest. Hope the vet gives you some good information so you can make a decision. But please, if you decided to pts, think about it hard as it's the only option that cant be undone. x

i think only you can decide on what to do - i am so sorry you are having to face such a decision. Hopefully the bvet shall give you some good advice.

xx

All our love........it's a decision i too don't want to make so i totally sympathise with you xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>
HUGS and wheeeeeeeks for you both xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

awww it is a really tough decision to make, I know how you feel I had to make one recently. :(

Only you will know what is best for Oki but you will make the right decision. Hope your vet gives you some good advice.

Sending you and Oki lots of hugs and xoxoxoxo

There is no evidence here to have a pig destroyed. I'm shocked and disgusted.

If a piggy is eating then I would keep going with him. PTS is only as a total last resort for me.

Not sure what is actually wrong with pig here but could it be a lack of calcium? I do hope he bucks up. I wouldn't give up on him yet he sounds like a little fighter. :)

I would say if you have the time to make sure he has food and water near him as he can't walk then stay with him!
Especially if he isn't in pain.

Like Sunshine said. PTS animals should be 100% the last resort x

been to the Vets yesterday,we are trying now on metacam and Critical care ,the vet said, that he might die very soon, but we will give him a try with that meds.He had some diarroeh
Regarding the one comment there, that the person is shocked and disgusted,I can only say I love my guinea to bits ,I just don't want him to suffer longer as possible, everything else is just selfish..and not murder! He is still with us today and eating fine,so we still hope he goes by himself falling asleep forever,we think it might happen soon, but until then we give him the best care he can get.

thanks for you all your input and I keep you posted:)

I'm glad he is still eating. That is a good sign. Do keep us posted. I've not had to face this yet but I know it will come one day and I dread it.

7 is a marvellous age, I'm always in awe of anyone who can pigs into pensioner hood!

Hey you aren't too far from me too I'm on the otherside of the water in Liverpool. :)

Take care and we'll be keeping fingers and paws crossed for little Oki.

(((hugs)))

I hope he gets better. My baby Ringo(not a baby anymore) She is approx 6 years...at the least anyway. I hope she stays with us forever but I know that is like trying to stop animal abuse, impossible. Oh well, I shall spend all the time in the world with her. I believe that comment about them being shocked and disgusted, Is pretty stupid. You are doing the right thing I think. Hope this helps. :)

definately a good sign he is still eating - i agree with everyone on here, PTS is last resort and he seems to be coping ok at the moment.

Keep us updated on his progress x

Thanks again,it helps a lot to post here and read your warm comments :)

If I could I would stay at home with the poor fella again,I did on Monday, but needed to go back to work...today my boyfriend is off,so he has nice company. I never thought he would live that long, bought him in Holland, then i moved to Germany, and now he is already 3 years in England,if only he knew ;) My boyfriend knows him "only" since 4 years, but absolutely adores him. It's just so heartbreaking to see him like this..at least his whimpering noises are gone,so he is not in obvious pain, but he always tries to find a better way to sit or lay down and that does not look comfy..
I read somewhere here ,that guineas like Parsley, never tried that before,so I bought some, and both tucked in immediately. Will get him some of his favourite Basil on my way back home to work and even bought some baby food yesterday and have syringes from the vet,in case he stops eating...

yes they do like parsley but its high in calcium so only small amounts as a treat!

If the pig is still eating, there's hope. If it comes to the point where he doesn't want to eat and / or can't move, you have to consider quality of life and only you can make that decision.

I had this just last week with my Harry, I kept him going by feeding him by hand for a few days but in the end he gave up and went to sleep in my arms.

Hope your little guy is ok

Hi Sophie, I totally agree with you on that one,we keep a very close eyes on him and try to make his remaining life as comfy as possible.

I never had to make a decision like that before, one of my other guineas just died over night without any warning..so with Oki it's different and for the first time to make such a hard decision..maybe he takes it off us and decides to go by himself, which would be better of course.

Yes, I agree, I had two die in two weeks.. the first one I took to the vets even though I knew really she was dying, and I had to leave her at the vets and she died there - the second one I knew he was dying and he didn't seem to be in pain so I sat and cuddled him until he went (very peacefully). I wish I had done that with the first one too rather than her dying at the vets but she was having fits and was in pain so I thought that was best.

Fingers crossed for you, only you can make the decision and know that it's right, I wish they would die in their sleep but sometimes they just don't!

Though he is still eating for himself I would be syringe feeding now as I doubt he is eating enough to maintain his weight and get all the vitamins and minerals he needs.
Good luck.

I had a piggie who had trouble walking and became paralysed in her back legs however (quite strange I know) did not show any pain until a couple of days before she passed. The vet said she had arthritis of the spine and back legs. You could try your piggie with Potter Tabritis tablets half per day crushed with water. They are a herbal supplement for humans with arthritis but can be used for piggies as well. It helped relieve stiffness in my piggie's back legs as they were not being used much. Another thing I purchased was a vetbed which helpes keeps piggies warm, therefore helping with circulation. Also absorbs urine so if your piggie is having trouble standing to wee this would be ideal. One other thing I would suggest would be a vitamin c supplement - the chewable ones from the chemist. Like other members have suggested try some calcium. Osteocare is supposed to be good. The liquid dosage is 1ml per day for up to three days. Is she able to get to her water bottle. If not you could take her water bottle to her while she is feeling a bit weak to ensure that she doesn't get dehydrated. I hope your piggie is starting to feel more comfortable soon. What you have to think about is she whether she is in any pain and if her quality of life is affected. You know her better than anyone else does.

If you truly are asking for opinions you will find there are many - at least two sides to everything - and, therefore, my opinion is as valid as the others.

I recall several threads like this on here. I wonder if members are in fact seeking permission or forgiveness for an act they realise is suspect: to try to lessen the guilt by obtaining approval.

It doesn't work like that. The decision is one you make alone, not discussed on a public forum. The guilt you carry alone as well.

I feel that when making this type of decision it is so personal that to discuss it on a forum really is not appropriate. Obviously this is just my opnion, but personally I wouldn't want anyone elses input as I think its such a private matter.

I do see where you are coming from Lucinda and Debbie but at the same time me personally I've never been through this. I've thankfully not had any illnesses with my pigs (except for Cuzzy of course who is no longer here) so asking for advice on the subject of what can be done for a pig is what I would do.

I wouldn't expect anyone to say oh yes put to sleep as as you ladies say its a personal matter. To be honest, I couldn't do it. I just couldn't take a pig out of the barn knowing he/she would never come back. And thats selfish and I'm weak! But I know the day may come sometime and Peter and I will have to make that decision together.

I've had to have 2 of my dogs pts - neither was a decision that I particularly relished but was something that as their owner I had to do. Not all decisions we make as pet owners will sit comfortably with us and many will keep us awake at nights but we still have to make them.

As humans we have to make the decisions for the animals and while yes, euthanasia is a personal matter, it doesn't hurt to have advice from others even if the final decision can't be shared.

I agree - there are so many people on this forum that have suggested things to help my piggies that I didn't even know about and thought pts was the only option at that stage. I do understand where you are both coming from though (Lucinda and Furry Friends).
