Jessie could be due to have her pup's any day now, and i've been thinking how small they are going to be and now i'm worried that they may be able to fit through the wide bars on Jessie's cage?

If this is a possibility, how can i pup proof it without spending any money? (i'm trying to save every penny incase something goes wrong with the labour or if the pups need any vet care)

Don't know why but i feel daft for asking this, like i should know the answers lol

What kind of cage do you have? I had a litter of pups years ago in a ferplast cage with a plastic base and a wire top and never had any issues. I've always found guinea pig mums very good in keeping their babies in line :))

I have the ferplast 120, plastic base, wire top :)

Jessie's cage is 2-3 ft off the floor so on the off chance one pup managed to get out it will causes some nasty injuries, think i'd rather be safe than sorry !

Then again i am an over worrier so if i'm over reacting just give me a virtual slap! :))

I think the pups will be bigger than you think? How big is the space between each bar? I will rack my brains for ideas. x

What kind of animal is Jessie?

I assumed she was a dog, then saw ferplast 120 rolleyes :))

you could put some cardboard round the outside to make the "base" a bit taller? pierce some holes in it and attach it with cable ties.

Oooo good idea! Jessie would be my super big, under-aged pregnant guinea! (obviously not bred by me)

The space between the bars is 2.5cm - i think i'm over reacting aren't i?

I doubt they will be able to squeeze through such a small gap, but if it would make you feel more comfortable, Amanda's idea is a good one!

I'm still trying to convince my hubby to have Jessie's cage in our bedroom till the pups are born but so far he's having none of it! He did offer to by me a sleeping bag though mallethead

This is my Jessie and her big lumps, i honestly can't waiat for this to be over so i know she'll be alright!

No idea when she's due! its so annoying!

To be honest, she doesn't look THAT big to me at the moment, unless it is a small litter which is more than likely as she is so young and its her 1st and last obviously.

Maybe suzy will be able to advise but i wouldn't have said she is due quite yet.

We bought 2 "female" piggies from a pet shop 3 years ago, one turned out to be a boy so we had him done, the female was pregnant and gave birth without a hitch.

But as you know, when the time comes there will be unlimited help and advice on here should you need it. x

OMG surely she can't get much bigger? My poor baby!

I've had her to the vets who confirmed pregnancy she didn't like to say how far she was though as she said there is no definate way to tell, she said she is definately over 6 weeks as she could feel the pups moving. My poor girl!

Her weights are getting stupid now :/ she started out at 816 grams on the 8th sept and today (41 days later) she's 1091! She's over taken one of my adult boars!

maybe it is just the picture then, i just know y girl who had 3 pups was bigger than that. All piggies will be different though.

Sleeping bags can be very handy! :)) Also I doubt baby pigs would climb the near-vertical sides of the base. If you're concerned, just keep anything they might be able to climb on top of away from the edge.

I assumed dog too don't know why.
I know lots of people opt for fern lasts they won't be as small as you imagine, but they get curious about -everything- pretty much straight away so make sure they're safe. If you're super worried you could maybe attach some cortex to the bars to make sure they can't climb out.
Sorry if my advice is wrong I'm just guessing x

lol!

I think i'll make the base a little high just to be on the safe side, or i could put the cage on the floor in a room thats piggie proof............urgh so much stress! Glad she's worth it lol

If that's the two options, I'd probably make the base higher - if baby piggies ARE going to climb out, you don't want them climbing out while you're out, and not being able to get back in and being all hungry!

rolleyes I think we're all mad y'know! :))

oooo good point! Yes i shall make the base higher and give Jessie a good talking to about how to control her pups - that should sort the problems out lol
