Midnight was just in his cage and I was getting into bed and a of a sudden he just started wheeking out of nowhere and squeaking. I checked him over to make sure nothing was hurting him. It sounded like the happy sound he makes when he thinks he's getting food but it lasted longer and there was no reason for him to think I was going to feed him. Any ideas?

they can 'cry' when they lose a friend. but sometimes i think they play on our emotions and make a whimpering kind of noise, to say how hard done by they are for not getting all the food they want! :))

sounds like he was just trying his luck for more food, or thought he heard a noise that sounded like he would be getting more. is he a lone piggy? he might not have been wanted to be left alone.

Guinea pigs can make little whimpers when in pain. Sounds like your little piggy was being cheeky and chancing his arm (paw) :)) for more food.

Okay seems like he was probably trying to get more food. He is alone, and his friend just passed away but he acts totally normal. He has finished his grieving and seems to be okay now.

If he was making that happy wheeking sound, my guess would be that he was hopeful that more food was coming. Mine will wheek if there's even the slightest possibility that someone, somewhere might be thinking about feeding them! He may have heard some sound that you're not even aware of making that he associates with food.

I do think they can cry... one of mine used to whimper like a puppy when she got her nails clipped. When she lost her lifelong companion, Sundae would wheek out nowhere and would stop when we came over, then would start up again when we left. In that case, I think she was anxious/lonely. She stopped once we introduced her to a new friend is now back to only wheeking for food.

He's just chancing his luck. If he's on his own now he might also do it as he knows you will give him attention. Piggies thrive on company so if they don't have a friend of their own kind (the best kind) then they need much more human company even if it's not the best substitute.

Are you considering getting him a new friend? I am sure he'd benefit from it. A local rescue may be able to help him find a new buddy he gets on with well.

I think he was probably chancing his luck. I have considered getting him a new friend, however I at least need to wait until he has finished his antibiotics...also not sure if it is a good idea. He seems to be completely fine, if not happier. I am also from the US and rescues are few and far in between, but I have looked into it. I absolutely do not want to get another from a pet store. So if I were to get him another it would have to be at a time that I could travel to get him one. I will be going to Michigan during the summer and may look into getting another one there. How do you think piggies do on long car rides? Does it depend on the pig? We are looking at a 7 or 8 hour drive.
