Do Piggies Lose Weight As They Get Older?

Hi everyone!

Just wondering if it's normal for piggies to lose bit of weight as they get older. I mean gradual weight loss over time. Not sudden.

For example, my Daisy will be 6 tomorrow and if I compare her weight now to that of around 1.5 years ago, she now weighs 100g less than she did back then. In that time she has had treatment for a severe ear infection and bladder stone surgery. Her weight has always fluctuated up and down by around 30-50g.

I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed a weight change in their older pigs?

Yes, just like people some do, some!
Though some remain there target weight through out there lives

If the 100g has been very gradual over 18 months then I'd say it is more than likely due to age. If she lost it due to her ill health a while back I would have been difficult for her to gain it back at her age, even when they are completely healed.

Older pigs do tend to lose condition as they age and may appear bonier too- my 7 year 8 month old sow with heart failure is still her prime weight at 1070g currently but she does have a Boney back end... Even though she still has her luscious Tumshy tummy! The weight can shift as they age without actually losing any of it.

Any further weight loss is have her seen by a vet but I think for now you needn't worry. Maybe weigh her more frequently to pick up on any changes sooner. I weigh my two oldies daily and my youngsters weekly.
