Okay, so i mentioned something about Guinea pigs and straight away my mom said no. The reaction i expected. I asked why and she said because they smell really bad, well not the piggies themselves, but the cage. I think she's getting this from my 'friend' who had a male piggie, and she cleaned him out once a week, but more like her mom made her, she wouldn't of otherwise, and didn't clean up the poop daily!mallethead I think shes worried that the whole house will smell,
but if i change the fleece when it starts to smell - sweep up poop everyday, and keep my room ventilated it should be fine shouldn't it?
This is the first reaction off mom if you want anything ;) You have to 'play at it' which, I'm quite good at ;) :))

Mine only get a proper, thorough clean out once a week (as in all bedding removed), they are kept on shredded paper in a wooden hutch.

Noone has ever complained of the smell, and the guineas themselves certainly don't smell - they are quite clean as small furries go.

If you get two boys they won't smell any worse that girls, JoJo is cleaner than my two girls in fact! And just remember long haired guineas can smell if you don't brush them/keep their hair trimmed to stop poop etc getting matted in it - not at all nice for the guineas. I have two long haired and two rough/long haired guineas and mine smell no different as they all get brushed/trimmed regularly.

Oh, i dont no why i said, 'she only cleans him out once a week' < Yeah i know thats normal, silly me, but yeah she only cleaned the poop once a week whenshe done her normal clean out so it stunk, and i think my mom think they'll smell like that :(

Is your piggies hutch outside?

As far as I know mine don't smell but we don't get many visitors lol. We do a big clean once a week but do daily poo and clears and hoover up the hay etc. I think Daisy the hamster smells more than the piggies as she keeps her cage in a complete and utter tip rolleyes

Well my 6 inddor guinea pigs are cleaned out every day this includes me shaking the blankets and fleece and changing the newspaper in the litter tray and picking up any stray poops. Every 2 days i wash all of the blankets and towels used in their set up as it can start to smell a little bit.
Using sawdust, megazorb or carefresh can create more of a smell, if you can get them litter trained you can house them on fleece and have a nice litter tray to clean out each day rather than a full cage simples:))

I sweep out everything, poos and hay every day and change the fleece and towels every 3 or 4 days and it doesn't smell. Leave it much longer and there's a bit of a whiff!

i have 15 indoor guineas on sawdust who get a full clean every 3 days. they dont smell as long as old veggies they havent eaten are taken out and some of the piggies need their poo corners cleaning more often rolleyes
all in all they smell pretty good especially if you get the lavender sawdust :)) in fact the One rabbit smells worse than all 15 guineas! :))
good luck on wearing down your mum! it took me two years to convince my mum to get me a dog and now we have two! rolleyes :))

Mine are on woodshavings and they get a full clean out once a week and they don't smell. I have 3 seperate boars, and 3 girls which are together, and the girls are cleaner than the boys, but that might just be what my guinea-pigs are like.

Thanks :) I'm usually pretty good at it tbh! ;) I think once i show her where the piggy would go,and tell her the only reason Jack (my friends old piggie) smelt is because she didn't clean him out properly, and tell her i will pay for everything, she should! come around :)Hopefully ..

No they dont really stink unless they are left to marinade!

Just like your house loo.. if you didnt flush it regually (when used) it would start to whiff too!

I dont over clean my boys, they get a spot clean daily to remove stray foods/poops and toilet corner cleaned and a full clean out once a week

Hi,

I find I have to clean out their litter tray every other day, and the fleece every three to four days to stop any smell plus I have a neutradol gel freshener up on the wardrobe:))

They definately don't smell as much as hamsters and rats etc so if you keep on top of the cleaning they should be fine. my sows seem to smell less than my boars for some reason

I sleep about 10cm from my 2 boys & I can tell you I smell nothing. They live on fleece, even the hay doesn't smell. I was really worried about it as I have a v small studio flat but I needn't have worried...

We have two boars, each in a separate cage.

We clean out the whole cage (vet-bed, blanket etc) every week to 10 days. We do spot cleans and poop scoops frequently (every two days) and they don't smell at all.

They used to smell a bit more when they lived together because they used to spray each other but apart from that, I have to say they're not smelly animals at all.

I mentioned them to my mom again and she just said no, again. Ill leave it for a bit until i actually moveinto the room, i hope i can get a pair ;)
