Hi,
Brodie my 4 year old Teddy hasn't been acting himself the last couple of days - normally laid back was chattering at his cage mate- on his weekly Sunday check I could find nothing wrong, he was eating and weeing so I gave them a little time out and put him in the hospital bay overnight. Today still eating and weeing but noticed no poops, so I thought I would do a second check for lumps and saw that he had anal impaction I followed the video and think I caught it early as not distended and not overly large.

If you could have seen the relief on his face after and the chirpy noises he made as he snuggled me - I now have one very happy chap.

My questions are : 1) How often do I need to check him i:e how often to these re-occur 2) Is there any food that helps prevent these ( they have loads hay and greens each night)
3) when I said laid back - I meant lazy - does he need to exercise more 4) Does he need any medication or lubricant

Worried about one other thing..............

"These lighter, softer pellets are called caecal faeces and are very important to your guinea pig's health because they contain important B-complex vitamins. Caecal pellets are trapped on their way out of the rectum in an area called the perineal sac and the larger, harder fecal pellets are pushed out."

Does this mean Brodie won't be getting enough B complex vitamins if he can't get at them due to impaction ??

You can offer him the expressed lump to nibble on; otherwise, sprinkle or syringe 1/8 of a human vitamin tablet on his veg or syringe. The caecotrophs contain other things, too.

Sadly, the muscles don't strengthen; all you can do is keep on top of it and if necessary check and clean more often as the muscles weaken further. :(

Thank you Wiebke I have Vitamin B complex tablets that I take myself so I will try that - if he shows no interest in nibbling the lump:eek:

He will need only very little extra vitamin C, so don't overdo it!

No advice Sara, just wanted to send Brodie a bit of love x
