Do rescues tend to castrate their boars before rehoming so they can go with females or do they pair up with other boars?

Also how is the rehoming going? Just wandered with the way things are at the moment whether people are coming forward to adopt?

There are a lot of piggies out here waiting to be rehomed, it is quite hard at the moment, sadly. I can't answer for rescues, but I would think the cost of neutering all boars before rehoming would be quite prohibitive. As a fosterer I am more inclined to pair up boars to re home. xx

We only castrate if it is necessary to pair the boar up if a boy will get on with another male guinea we would not castrate. Although Sophie has a chap who is on the list as he is not very friendly with other boys.
We have had quite a few enquiries lately I have two home checks to do tomorrow, might have something to do with all the cute babies Sophie has had born lately to the pregnant rescue sows that came in.
I know Sophie has had some success re-homing lately too.
We have some long stay boars still looking but one of the homechecks is for them so my fingers are firmly crossed.

I agree with what has already been said. We have castrated boars but that has been to enable rehoming when a boar has not been able to be paired with any available boars.

We have regular enquiries for rehoming but at moment approx 2 pairs a month are actually being rehomed.

I'm getting 2 babies from a rescue today!:(|) I was told by the centre that they castrate boars so they can be rehomed with females or males. Also if 1 then dies at about 3 or 4 years of age (or whenever) it hopefully would make finding a new friend easier & the owners have the choice of getting a female or male.

I have only ever had boars & would only ever have boars. I have never & do not ever want to have any of them castrated - unless there is a medical need. grrrr After all, from experience they can be rehomed after the loss of a friend. Sometimes it is harder than others for them to settle, but they do get there.

My new babies haven't yet been castrated as they are still very young. I am hoping that I won't have to have them castrated. After all I have a lot of experience of caring for boars & I also know how to sex them, so there would never be any issues over which sex a new pig is!

I understand their reasoning, but I also think they should be willing to consider the experience & wishes of the new owners. It shouldn't be done just because it is policy. Everyone should be looked at as an individual & then work out what is best for the piggies as they go to their new home! -c

PS/ I have a thread going for the new arrivals, but I only have about 8 hours to go till they come home! x)x)x)
