i think elliot my boyfriend thinks i have cracked up but i have just bought a stethoscope off ebay, especially since i cant get my head near david to check his breathing. it was only a couple of quid.
do we think this will be of any use? and if so how do you use it lmao.
I use one regularly; handy for keeping a check on my heart pig and finding out where any noisy breathing is coming from.
It'll take a bit of practice to get used to it, and it'll take a while to recognise what is normal and what's not, but in relation to David you're basically looking for where the noise is the loudest. Place the stethoscope on both sides of his upper body, then either side of his chest (underneath), listen to his heart (good luck keeping up ), and also listen to his throat (takes more practice, don't press) and finally listen to the top of his nose!
It's normal to hear some breathing sounds, but anything like clicking/rumbling/rasping isn't normal.
For anyone else who hasn't got a groovy stethoscope (must get one) then holding the piggy carefully up by your ear and listening to the side just behind the foreleg does work. Press your ear into the side of the piggy. You will hear digestion noises (medium) and chuckling (very very loud) and heartbeat (faint) and breathing noises(medium). I use this method to check on breathing really, luckily I don't have any piggies with heart trouble. (Touch wood). Generally I have to hold them there until the chuckling stops as they get puzzled over what I'm doing.....by which time I'm nearly deaf in that ear!
I have a stethoscope and my piggies seem to think it is a snake! it is much easier to just listen to them with my ear than with the stethoscope the little monkeys! Recommend having someone hold the pig so you can concentrate on listening.
