It has somehow been a debate on whether to clean piggies's ears or not? I've found some tutorials on youtube and the "breeders" here i often read that they clean piggy ears to avoid ear infections? How true is this and do you have an experience?

My rainbow Bridge Piggie guiseppe had smelly ears. I did ask on here about cleaning them. Unless you know what you're doing I'd recommend getting a vet to show you. I know at the moment you can't go in the vets room. Do the ears smell?

I’ve never cleaned their ears in the three years I’ve had the boys. And same goes for the girls. I don’t think there is any need to clean them. If they’re dirty it’s best to get it checked out to be sure there’s no underlying issue.

They definitely don’t need cleaning unless there’s a medical issue attached. None of my pigs have ever had their ears cleaned and never got an infection because of it. I think it would do more harm than good if you do it for no reason. If you suspect there’s a problem then go to the vet but definitely don’t clean ears as part of routine care

I only had one piggy that I cleaned the ears. But this was after my vet has told me to do so. He was suffering from a skin condition before we adopted him and his skin was always dry and causing "dandruff" like stuff. He was treated by the rescue before we adopted but it seemed that his skin was always like that all the time. He wasn't scratching though and didn't have any wound or bald patches. His ears was full of gunk too. And my vet told me that there wasn't any problem with his ears and that whatever dry skin problem he had might be causing the gunk build up. He told me just try to remove whatever gunk that I can see in the ears. Although I never try to do any ear poking in the ear canals. I only removed the ones I can easily remove.

Thank you all so much for your replies! I was just wondering if this is something that I should add to our monthly routine care :)

2 out of my 6 routinely need ear cleaning. One a Teddy (they are well known for gunky ears/dry skin) needs a fortnightly clean, the other an Aby cross needs it less frequently. I check my pigs ears weekly when they are weighed and health checked only ever do it if they are mucky. My vet picked up the mucky ears with the Teddy and talked me through how to do it. Never put anything in the ear canal, only wipe round the folds in the ear flap.

I think the outers can be cleaned safely, mine loves it when i clean their over ears with mildly damp cloth(little warm).
