My mum thinks that "animals" shouldn't be kept in my front room and she can't wait for me to get a bigger place to live. I asked why? She said so the guinea pigs can go outside and live rolleyes

Firstly, it's my front room. I live here and she doesn't. Secondly, even when I do move they will still be housed indoors. Why don't people understand that I love my piggies and they are members of my family. I haven't told her yet i'm getting 3 more :(|)

Does anyone else ever get negative comments?

all my family think the piggies should live outside.

errr no they're my family and i like them indoors. its like asking me to live outside! they just dont understand.

dont tell them your getting more i dont just see if they notice lol :)

oh god....
my mom said to me once...(she had phoned me when i was on the way back from the vets) oh god clare.... just hold them in a bucket of water and get it over with....grrrr
some people dont get it...!

I'm known as the crazy guinea pig lady by my frineds... :(|)

OMG How can someone say that about an animal!

And you're right, they just don't get it!

I don't tell her, my daughter always does and she can't say anything nasty about them to her :(|)

My mum used to give me grief, when I first got Artie (and Harvey) within this first day home he was ill (URI) and had an eye infection my mum told me i should take him back and get a refund....rolleyes then she moaned about the mess, the smell and whatever else :)) she used to call them the 'hamsters' and ask me why i wanted a hamster for a pet.

But then...as the months rolled by....Harvey and Arite had a strange effect on my mother who isnt so keen on animals.

I noticed that if she had been out to the supermarket, an extra bag of carrots would appear in the fridge, some guinea pig snacks ontop of the hutch, two fluffy creatures on her lap...:)) Over the year my boys have changed my mum, she remembers their names (not just the brown/ginger one), is forever buying them toys and treats, sets up their run as an adventure playground, cleans them out if I'm busy and has told me she'd be very sad when i move out for good as she'll miss the boys so much. (edit: we're actually discussing whether my mum can have the boys full time, and be there owner as both mum and dad dont want to see them go)

Mum has a soft spot for Harvey, and I find her in the garden alot nattering away to the boys hehe! x)

However, my nana still sees them as the hamsters and i have yet to convince her otherwise!{:|

Bless your mum :)

My family have always known I love animals, but they don't understand when I buy veggies and salad JUST for them. They think I spoil them far too much rolleyes

My father in law didn't understand why I wants pigs at all and he sometimes called them the hamsters too (although he doesn't do it in a mean way, I think he just forgets! :)) He enjoys watching them potter round during floor time though and has a fuss when they're in :)

Some people at work think I'm slightly mad, but I don't really care! :p

thats just my mom.... i dont think she quite gets "small animals"
she is still under the impression that they are "replacable"
but has recently started to come round... shes not so bad now.... that was when i first got my 2 girls...
its just that alot of people dont see them as pets like dogs and cats are...
ah well....
i'd have my piggles over an dog or cat any day... :)

The last time I went shopping my mum came with me and the trolley was full of veggies and she said is ALL that veg for the guinea pigs. She gave me one of those looks and walked off :(|)

I think that's it actually, people don't understand the bond you form with them.

I must be really lucky, my parents are totally laid back with the whole idea of having guinea pigs in the house as well as the rabbits:)

Last saturday my Dad helped make the stand for the 6ft c&c cage and oh my godness he was a star I couldnt have done that by myself! :(|)

Mam is always going on at me to improve the housing and makes sure they have all have the best hay, quiet often see her giving them sneaky treats toorolleyes

As for the rabbits shes let them have the bedrooms and makes sure they are never too hot bless her :)

My parents are not keen on animals what so ever, they don't like handling them and they don't pick them up but they do love to watch them and have always offered to pay the vets bills if I dont have any money on me :)

^ I would also love to know why people call them hamsters! >.> Then again my nana thinks that any small animal that isnt a bunny is a hamster (including degus/guinea's/chins etc.)

My parents are totally cool with piggies and all other types of furries, small, large and occasinally not furry at all!

Now I live with my partenr who never had pets at home and didn't really understand them so much but since she's lived with me she's got so attatched to the boys that when Pip died she was really super sad. after we'd buried him in the garden, like half an hour later she was like ' I miss Pippy - can we go bring him back in now?'

Now she can't se without them. She was so excited when she got to help Merry go boar dating and he picked the same baby she liked.

She didn't really understand my pet frogs though and still isn't sure about the turtle cos ' you can't do anything with him'

People do think I'm a little loopy. Someone asked how many animals I had in the house the other day, I told them, and their comment was, so you're single right? rolleyes

My dad says I have more pigs than brain cells, but then thats not a hard number to get to :))

My mum has never really got it, she's not really an animal person, if it's not a cat she's not that bothered, doesn't get why I like pigs so much.

Was told I'd 'out grow' guinea pigs because they're childrens pets before rolleyes

I take it all with a pinch of salt. My home, my life, my choice. If people don't like them they don't have to come to my house.

Piggies in the garden.

I would just like to say my piggies live in the garden. But that doesn't mean I love them any less than ones kept indoors. I will sit outside in the garden talking ect to piggies all year round.

i dont think thats what was meant... :)
stuff like this is personal preference... i could never house mine out side after a spate of crimes and horrific incidents... like the time someone cut the head off a bunny and placed it with its back end sticking out behind the shed so it looked like the bunny was stuck... then my neighbor picked it up and well... you can guess the rest lots of screaming and tears....
ugh... i hate people some times...!

I get the whole how are your hamsters/gerbils/mice thing, anything but actually guinea pigs :(
Added to that, when I told people I was getting my puppy a large amount of people asked me was I getting rid of the piggies mallethead whyyyyyyyy?!?!?

I know what you mean. One of my brothers is also a total cavy slave, so he always sticks up for me but my dad and other brothers think it's cruel to keep my piggies indoors.
They also just don't understand why they're so important to me.

I guess until you have the love and trust of a piggy, you can never really understand how any of us feel. Which is sad...
To never have been loved by a piggy 8...

well recently my mum gave me a bit of grief about spending my money on a big vet bill :( and my boyfriend likes them to a degree but he's ridiculously house proud (I live in his house) so he isn't keen on them living indoors so they only come in if they're not well and he hates C and C cages rolleyes I also have to sneak toys and beds etc in or I get the third degree for spoiling them instead of saving for holidays ((sigh))
