I planted some carrot seeds the other day and plan on a planting tomato plant. I like the idea of being able to DIY with the pigs instead of buying everything. I want to be more self sustaining. I grow grass in contatiners for when they have annihilated the lawn and it needs time to recover.

Anything else that you grow for your pigs and would survive growing in a wet part of england?

peppers is an easy to grow plant i used to just have mine indoors by the window, Carrots are fairly easy, i grew cucumbers once they were small little ones but they were awesome! I haven't grown anything this year as I haven't had the time or space. With plants like tomatos and peppers though plant loads as it takes ages to get just a couple off the plant. Sping onions are easy to grow in containers too but obviously not for piggies

Might have to try peppers, my 4 go crazy for them!

I tried and failed miserably last year trying to grow carrots, lettuce and parsley - luckily for me my new boss has a brilliant veg garden ( and I can help myself as much as I want:nod: ) and a couple of my husbands workmates have allotments and they pass on stuff as well - Yeah!

I have grown my own before and will be doing again. We only moved into this house last year and the garden will be the big project this year. I already grow sage, parsley, basil, rosemary, oregano and mint and now have a 5 tier planter that I will be using for my herbs from now on. While we are doing the garden I will be stuck with containers and growbags but I currently have brussel seedlings growing and the purple carrots have been put in a container. I also planted chives, jalapenos and bell peppers in my propagator and waiting on the seedlings. Also planning to grow tomatoes and chards this year its just finding the space lol

I have tried and tried to grow veg! I'm pretty successful with animals... but when it comes to plants/shrubs including veggies etc I fail miserably! My friends say I have black fingers of death haha!

I really wish I could! being self sufficient is my dream, I can do the live stock... just need Asda supplying the greens...

You can grow whatever you want if you have the time and space for it. What resources do you have available to you?

I would recommend the RHS mobile phone app as well if people are really into growing their own, I find it useful to keep track of what I should be doing and even covers common pests. Only so many fruit, veg and herbs types are free though, the others you need to buy extra packages for so depends on what you want to grow

I have an allotment that is piggy orientated, sod us slaves :)) I don't bother with carrots as then nearly always fail or get carrot fly. I have a herb garden and grow lots of parsley, coriander and dill throughout the year. I have cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, courgettes, beans, lettuce, kale (2 different types), sweetcorn and brocolli growing at the moment :)

I'm attempting carrots, coriander on the window sill. And various herbs... We want to make the garden a full on herb feast for the piggies to enjoy...

For the piggies, I made a raised bed 1metre square on heavy duty castors in which I grow parsley, spinach pak choi and lollo rosso. I grow carrot and parsnip tops on the kitchen window sill. I also have created a small lawn area that I allow to grow long that is also full of dandelions!

For me, I grow runner beans in large pots and have three grow bags on an old pallet (again with castors) in which I grow courgettes.

I will have to grow some herbs. Now we've never had any dandelions grow in our garden so I had an idea...
If I blow the seeds of a dandelion onto the grass, do you think it would work?

My boyfriend laughed at me but thats how they would naturally spread and grow in the wild with the wind.

Last year we grew Romaine & Multi-leaf Lettuce plus Parsley. Because of the mild winter we've still got the 3 parsley plants from last year. I sowed a variety of herbs last month & the some of the seedlings are just about ready to transfer into pots. Will see what grows well & what doesn't.

You could do that or you could just grow the seed in a pot, then you don't need to spread dandelions everywhere. I'm amazed they don't grow in your garden already!

I tried growing dandelions but they got less and less till none left. Why don't they do that in the flower garden.
