Run about the house, providing you are watching them of course?

I got two Guinea pigs yesterday and they are still nervous, so I am not sure if I should handle them for small amounts of time or if they will be OK being out of their cage for a couple of hours right from the start.

I let mine run around the lounge and they are happy doing that now. When I got my first piggy, Lennie, he had been kept in a box for 6 months and never let out. He hid under the sofa for the first couple of weeks and gradually became a bit braver. He still loves to sleep under the couch as it is cool and dark! As long as they have places to hide, they should be fine or you could do what some people do on here and make a sort of pen which you can take down after floor time. You can get them at a special offer price on zooplus at the moment. They still need a hidey place if in a pen so they feel safe :)

No, Not run around our house as its not too big and theres no room for them. They get enough exercise outside when the weathers nice and i cant let all 24 of my piggys in my house there'd be a mount of poo of what they'd leave behind for me to clean up ;D ;D

;D I agree, I think 24 piggies running around would be chaos ;D
I only let two out at a time, Lennie and Timmy with a cube divider across the room because they dont get on and Teddy and Larry together at a different time :)

I just cant imagine it :o ;D ;D ;D

I've got 5 and I don't let them run around the house as I've two daughters who play on the floor and I don't think it is hygenic. However I do let them play in a fenced area in my hall. I put loads of newspaper down and when they are finished I mop the floor with bleach (I've just had laminate down.)

mine live in the utility room and they have floor time in there daily if not out in their run. i have used the hall too, which works well, as a larger space might scare them more.

When the dog is up at his Grannys we let the piggies run around the house. The only one that is brave enough to run around is Buttons the rest just stand stil.

We have a strict rota!

1st - Cubby and Golly - They have 15 minutes in the mornings while I change paper in the cage and then play for ages under my bed "playground" and generally run round the room usually for about a hour in the evening and then again after Pookie sometimes

2nd - Bully - Has 10 minutes in the mornings too then in the evening wanders around the whole flat! If I go out the room he squeals so I leave the door open and he follows me! He even waits at the bathroom door for me! After about half an hour, he starts lopping about so I put him home

3rd - Pookie - I the evening he has a 'once' round the room and home, he's 5 now!

The guinea pigs aren't really meant to be in the house. They have their own shed and run in the garden.

Which is why they love coming in the house! Somehow, my parents never get round to telling me and my sister off for bringing them in...even when Sevi weed on my carpet! We sometimes put them on an old rug so that it doesn't matter when they have an accident.

Last time we brought them in Brandy got a bit scared and sat still, but Nutmeg loved exploring (she chewed the front cover of one of my Bibles...should I be worried? ;)) and Sevi seems to enjoy herself. She sometimes watches Neighbours on my lap as well...

If your piggies are nervous indoors just gradually let them get used to it, and if they get too scared take them back out and try again another time. They will gradually get used to the sounds of the house. (Sevi did, though she still can't stand the noise of cutlery knocking against itself).
