Do you prefer human names or non-gendered object/food/made up names for pets?

I personally never used a human name for any of my pets, LOL. I like food names or different names but it's just my preference. I try to think of names that go together, or sometimes it'll just pop in my head when I get my pets!

Pigs names I've used:
Maple, Maisie, Ginger, Apple

The pigs I've gotten from old friends, 2 of them had human names, & they did fit them LOL so I kept them the same:
Charlotte, Gordon

Hamster names I've used:
Blackberry, Brownie, Cookie, Honeybehr, Butterscotch, etc.

And, my horse's name is Promise! :)

I've used human names and other names. Sometimes it's because of how the pig looks, or sometimes it's because of what they do.
So Smartie because she was so clever, Kanga because she likes jumping. Panda because he had eye patches, Tufty because she was :)
I don't really like paired names much.

I currently have a pony who has a human name. It's a shortened version of his registered name and it does suit him. Also it sounds quite different to the other pony's name so they will always know who is being spoken to, even if they don't take any notice

I just name mine after my favourite anime (cartoon) characters so they have a mix of human/made up names.

Ludwig, Gilbert, Ryou, Romano , Matthew, Bakura, Sakurai, Eevee, Mumen, Joey, Yugi, Duke and Tristan

We usually went for slightly old fashioned girls' names for our sows.

Molly and Martha
Hilary
Harriet and Milly
Ivy and Daisy
Flora
Angelina
Queenie (came with the name, and it really suited her as she was a queen-sized guinea pig at over 1.5kg!)
Cupcake (came with the name)
Phoebe
Ruffles (came with the name - she was an absolute darling)
Nutmeg (came with the name)
Toby
Juliet (came with the name)
Sam

I always liked the idea of having two guineas called Clover and Catkin (Clover would be a pink eyed white and Catkin would be a sort of buff colour). However, we've decided not to have any more, so Clover and Catkin will remain fantasy squeakers!

My piggies' names are all Welsh although I have started to branch out into wildflowers, indigenous birds and characteristics beyond the official names that also fall into those categories (like Heini 'Lively' - which as been anglisized as Haynee or Briallen 'Primrose', Ffion 'Foxglove' etc.), - but then after coming up to 80 piggies, finding good names is not always as easy.

Piggies who come with a Welsh name keep theirs (that is how I accidentally ended up with my own wheeking Dylan Thomas) and some that come with an established name get similar sounding one if possible (Mrs Tiggywinkle aka Tiggy became Tegwen Draenog 'beautiful and blessed Hedgehog' aka Teggy).
Otherwise I have little group and breed themes running. And some piggies are named in memory of predecessors they vaguely resemble after a suitable gap.

All my Tribe piggies with their picture, name and meaning are in this link here: Wiebke's Tribe Photo Gallery
