If you saw my thread yesterday, you will know I rescued a piggy who is possibly pregnant. I have named her Hope. x) She's a tiny pig and I hate to think she could be expecting but she does look like it... :( What do you think?

Going by the bulge on her left side i would say its quite likely. she is lovely though and i love the name! xx

It is hard to be definite with a pic from that angle but she does look suspicious. If you could take a pic from directly above her so we can she her outline it will help.

She also looks to be a satin coated pig. If so you will need to provide a source high in calcium during her pregnancy, nursing and for several weeks after weaning to ensure her calcium levels are healthy. Satins are prone to having problems due to a genetic link to the satin gene and osteodystrophy.

I would highly recommend getting in touch with Milhaven rescue as this girl may need a more experienced carer to deal with the complications OD can have for her and the babies.

Thank you for the replies and advice. I would rather not palm her off on a rescue as I know how full they are at the moment and I don't think it would be fair. :( Also it is not definably known if she is pregnant. I would like to have the male neutered and re-bonded with her and this probably wouldn't happen if she were to leave. I will get another pic tomorrow hopefully. Don't want to stress her out. x

I am more than happy to help with this girl, I shall be catching up with emails in the morning as I've just got back from a very busy day and I really need a cup of tea and a sit down! Havn't even eaten today yet! :)

Just to update you all; both Hope and the male guinea pig will be going to Joanne at Milhaven guinea pig rescue. :) I just want the best for these guinea pigs, they really do deserve the best life possible. I am so grateful to Joanne, thank you so much. x

Well done you for helping this little one out! hope all goes well for her and her friend

Going to be hard saying good bye to the little boy :( I haven't handled the female as much incase she is pregnant but spent a good few hours with the boy today. I've named him Benji. :) I've been grooming him, he's very small, doesn't look "a couple of years old" like his past owner said. :{ He has a few scabs on him, I'm guessing Hope nipped him a few times probably after he was annoying her with trying to mate? Well that's my guess anyway. He's been snuggling up to me and starting to gain my trust, I'm going to miss him even though I've only had him a few days. Might even consider adopting him back from Milhaven rescue with his new friend if he's suitable for re-homing in the future. Is that bad?! :red

Thank you :) I know their names will probably change but they'll always be Hope and Benji to me. x)

I didn't realise they were going to millhaven permanently? I thought it was just to help the girl if she was pregnant after birth, then they were coming back to you? But i haven't read it properly, i dont suppose millhaven would mind just fostering them for you in the short term until after (if any) babies are born and all is well, as long as the funding was provided for the food, hay and vet treatment (if any needed) maybe you could discuss it with them....

I'm signing them over to Milhaven Rescue today. I don't have experience with OD which the female could have and she needs to go with someone experienced. x

Aw, ok, no worries, sorry to hear that, but you are doing the right thing. Big hugs xx

Sorry to hop in but how do you know she def has OD?. Not all piggies get it- she may live a perfectly normal life. I wouldn't rule her out for this.
I have two satin, both lovely little things and fit as fiddles!

We don't know but to be honest it sounds likely that she could. It's best to be on the safe side so she's with Milhaven rescue now. :)

I think your doing the right thing, given that the history of the poor girl shows a lack of care (therefor its unlikely her diet will have been catered to her possible condition) and fudge and rainbow doesnt have experience spotting the symptoms :) you never know, if she goes up for addoption with millhaven you might even be able to rehome her (after a healthy birth and weaning etc etc)
