Do you think they ever really realise how much work we put into their care?

I had my cleaner over this morning and we did a full cage clean and washed the piggy bedding and most of the cleaning she had to do was due to the piggies... hay gets everywhere. Then I made a salad for lunch which I eat in the piggy room, so of course I had to prepare a mini salad for the pigs. I thought, are dogs this much work? My sister says looking after her cat is less trouble.

I've kept dogs and cats and even the dog that opened the bin to get at the bag of rotten carrots, then ate the carrots, then puked them up, and finally got caught as she was trying to eat the puke (thanks for that nightmare, Shadow) - dogs and cats are relatively straightforward. They don't have quite the minute-by-minute mania guinea pigs do.

Also I've given up on the hay. People keep insisting I should sweep it up. No I did that ten minutes ago. But the floor's covered in hay. "🤷‍♂️"

We have also given up with hay…. We just live surrounded by hay too! I sweep & less than a minute later I spot hay.

I am not sure our little potatos realise what we do, so they can live in comfort. I want to move in with the pigs- our downstairs rooms need work doing& the pigs home within our home, always looks more inviting!

I brush up hay once a day after I've done the main cage clean. I've given up trying to keep the floor hay free. Unless we have visitors coming and then I brush up 2 minutes before they are due, got caught out a few times with early arrivals. We very rarely have visitors these days, I don't think many people appreciate a room full of guinea pig cages.

Their loss and your gain, sounds like.

I think I spend more time cleaning and washing for the pigs than I do for us humans living here lol and they have taken over this small flat (but we love having them).

Last week I found myself trying to rescue a little brown moth type insect from drowning in the shower, after 5 minutes of faffing around with this, I realised the insect I’d been trying to ‘save’ was in fact a small piece of hay. It gets everywhere!

Hoo boy. Before I brought my piggies home, I knew that my room could fit the bare minimum amount of space needed for two sows, but… Bare minimum? Um no thanks, not good enough. Maybe the pigs would be just as happy with that, but I wouldn’t lmaoo.

So I paid the breeder to hold them for me while I renovated my entire room; threw out my bed, my desk, put A LOT of my stuff in storage, only to go through the hassle of finding more space-efficient replacements. I wanted a 90x200 cm loft bed and a little desk underneath, but ended up with a 140x200 cm bed cuz the guy lied to us (screw FB Marketplace).
Had to find a way to sell that cuz it took more space than it gave, more hassle (not to mention building it just to tear it down, fitting it into the car, blah blah blah).

Then I finally found a nice loft bed, and it came with a desk underneath! Cue driving over there, squeezing it into the car, getting all the pieces upstairs (did I mention my room is upstairs? Yeah…) putting it together, and at last, finally being able to pick up my pigs.

All that space I managed to free up is now being occupied by their cage, hay bags, and floor-time stuff. 1/3 of my room belongs to me and the rest is theirs.

They have no idea.

It was when we were packing to move house that we realised just how much stuff the piggies have.....
Right now both of my washing lines are full of pig beds, hammocks and fleeces.
The boys grocery shop list is always remembered, unlike ours.
We just spent £80 on a new portable air con for them.
We spent an extra £200 on a washing machine with a bigger load capacity and better spin because of the pig fleeces.
Are they our little furry overlords? Absolutely
Do they enrich our lives, is it worth the money, time and effort? 100% yes!

We have cats here, also ponies, as well as the piggies.
Out of all three species, relative to their size, the pigs take more work and eat more than any of the others!
And do they appreciate it? No they don't, or Pippa wouldn't have bitten my leg while I was doing a bottom inspection the other day

I walk for an hour every day in all weathers just to go pick their favourite grass. Everyone who passes stares at me like I'm a lunatic. A few ask what I'm doing and then I have to explain it's for 2 diva piggies. 🙄

My piggies are the first to be served with breakfast every day, after a cuddle and coriander, obviously. They are the first to get their dinner too. I buy Coriander especially for them which I both hate the smell and taste of but the girlies adore. Thea, Misty and Bramble get supper just before I go to bed (nobody in my family has supper). I've spent loads on their stuff and would buy loads more if I had the space to store it all. They live in the garage as my OH doesn't like the thought of them living in the house but I would have them in the house in an instant if he ever changed his mind (Like that's ever gonna happen!) Hay still gets everywhere.
