I always get my hay from pets at home. I went the other day to get a bail and they all looked too Green, got one anyway as that's all they had and I've just opened it and it feels moist and it is definitely more Green than I've ever bought (only been a piggy owner 4 months)
Should I take it back?

Yeah it just looks like green hay has been added :/ it's strange, something isn't right with it I'm definitely going to take it back tomorrow. it hasn't got wet either

yep always been more brown. is it meant to be Green then?

"On the left is Oxbow US timothy hay, in the middle is Pets at Home UK timothy hay, on the right is local pet store supplied meadow hay."

High-quality hay is green and fragrant, the best for guinea pigs. On the left of this picture is the best hay possible, truly high-quality. On the right is hay that is still greenish, but not quite as good as the hay on the left- still fairly good, but not as good as the one on the left. The middle hay has little benefit to an animal's health, is low quality, and should only really be used if you can't get hold of anything else, in an emergency. Hope this helped:nod:

It's like a mixture of pets at home middle one and the meadow hay. but it's usually just like the middle one x

My girl's wouldn't touch that one in the middle and they would :coat:to get some that was better.

Oh I didn't know this! I just thought it would be suitable for them and at £9 a bale too! I'll have a look at the little pet shop down the road see if that's any better xx

I strongly advise you to get some better quality hay as soon as you can- hay is 80% of a guinea pig's diet, and it's incredibly important to get the best hay you can for your pig.
Here is the Oxbow website: Oxbow Animal Health | Home
Here is the KMS Hayloft website: Top Quality Hays from Washington State
And the Burgess site: Guinea Pig feeding hay, treats & litter | Burgess Pet Care
I believe these are all good examples of hay! If you can't order online (I get the hay from Ocado's Fetch site) then a store nearby may supply it. Basically, if you can get hay that is green, smells fresh and clean, from a reputable source, that's great.

Mine won't touch Oxbow Timothy Hay :mal: that was an expensive mistake!

@Amym91 does it smell ok? Hay that isn't nice doesn't smell too good. If you're not sure about it you can take it back and ask for an exchange.

Fussy hoglets! Which brand do you currently use? Our boys must have had bad hay at the shop, then we got a free bag of brown hay when we got them, and they finished that, before moving onto Oxbow timothy:D

At the moment they have a mix of Meadow and Ings from Hay and Straw and Burgess Timothy. We did start off buying meadow hay from the local pet shop but I stopped when we had little bugs crawling everywhere

wait so piggies should get high sugary hay ? I give mine the same hay i give the horses only cut it up with siccsors to make it a bit smaller . The hay on the left or on the right i would never give to a horse considering the high fructane levels green hay has. But so, for piggies it is better ? That strikes me as very odd considering they are so much smaller.
Quality wise my hay is great. It smells great, i know what cut it is, texture wise it is perfect too, but it's absolutely not that green.

Correct - piggies and bunnies can happily eat very green hay whereas for horses, most people 'season' it a bit and don't feed it too green. I would only ever feed P@H baled hay in an emergency and keep it for litter trays only. My piggies have the Burgess long stem timothy hay in their hay bag and the bales of Superhay in their hay box. They also have Readigrass. The bunnies have timothy from Timothyhay.co.uk.
