I only just got my guinea pigs on Wednesday so this is the first bag of hay I've bought, but it has a really strong smell. My pigs are indoor pigs, kept in my living room and the smell just hits you when you walk in and it's definitely the hay. The hay I bought was this one;

So I was wondering if this one is particularly smelly or if it's just a general hay smell?!

If all hay does smell, what do others do to try mask the smell? I'm currently burning a Yankee candle but don't really like using candles all the time.

actually I love the smell of the hay... but my daughter does not. I think it depends on our nose. Usually a good smell is indicative of a good quality hay, whereas a strong odour of mould is not good.
If you don't like the typical smell of a good hay, I don't know what to suggest you because I have bought three different brands and if the bag is open I feel the scent into the living room where my piggies live. Maybe the smell is stronger on the first days when I open the bag.
Anyway, our nose can get used to new scents. Try also the hay with chamomile, if you like chamomile...
Your hay seems to be very good.
These below are my last bags of hay: they have a smell (good for my nose)

What does it smell like? I believe the Burgess also use herbs and such in a lot of their hays so could it be that?

Please don't use scented candles around piggies as it's not good for them.

If it smells bad then it could be a problem with the hay and should be removed immediately, does it smell mouldy?

The hay I use smells lovely up close but I can't smell it in the room otherwise.

It smells really sweet. I think I'll try a different brand next time. It doesn't smell mouldy or off, but I just don't like the smell, I'm thinking it probably is something that Burgess has put in their hay.

I didn't know that about piggies and scented candles, so will definitely not use them. Can you use air purifiers with oils around them?

I just switched from meadow hay to Timothy hay and it smells much sweeter. It's a lovely smell, I think :)

Oh that's good! Yea it will probably say on the bag but I think it has marigold and chamomile etc in?

I think the purifier itself is fine but scented oils and stuff I don't think are okay? Is it like essential oils?

Hi there, Good quality medow hay suould smell clean and sweet, a 2 string bale in the back of the car is better than an air freshener

That's one of the hays I use too, it's such a great quality timothy hay so it does have a very fresh, sweet smell. It can a bit overpowering, I just make sure all hay bags are wrapped up so it's not as bad

I get my straight from the farm like @gizzy said it smells lovely in the back of the car! That reminds me..... must make a trip to the farm on Friday!
