I've enquired the vets in my area (Thanet) about neutering and none said they did it on a regular basis and none had figures to give me, so once again I'm panicking about having my boys done.

The one that gave me the most information was Companion Care and they also do it for the least money, so I'm leaning to here (this is where I always take them anyway and they're always good) but I was wondering if anyone had any concrete figures of death during this op or after? I'm so anxious about it that it's making me not want to go through with it!

I cant give you figures for complications however I can let you know my vets price it'd be £96 plus pain relief and anitbiotoics on top :-)

Companion care quoted me £61, not sure if that's with pain relief and antibiotics though :P My local vets was £90 but I don't trust them fully, they're always very rude!

about £20 on top of my price for meds :) the other vet I use would be closer to £150 :-) I am going to get my young boar neutered in advance of requirement hes about 10 months old living with a 4.5 year old so when I have the spare money he will get done so hes all ready for a sow when the old fart does pass :-)

Haha pre-emptive neutering! I'm so nervous about getting this done!

Its going back just over 5 years, but when i had my boar done it was around £50. And if it puts your mind at rest any, he recovered very quickly and is still going strong living happily with his wife pigs. x

Thanks that does help :) I've been looking online and I've seen that there's a 1/5 chance of death (allegedly, probably not true)! I'm so hesistant to even make an appointment for this

I doubt rescues would implement a boar neutering policy if those were the odds tbh

My vet, Dominika at Jacqui Paterson's, Stockton-on-Tees does all of Bunny Burrows neutering. The rescue get's a special rate but I don't think their normal rate is anyway near what's been quoted by others. Both of my boys were done there when in the care of Bunny Burrows & no problems whatsoever. I think she could almost do it blindfold. They also do the rabbit spaying & I picked 2 up yesterday with the neatest post surgery stitches I've ever seen. I think that the 1 in 5 ratio probably applies to the vets who don't do lots of these ops. I've been helping at Bunny Burrows for 9 months & they've probably had 20 to 30 neutered in that time & no losses or post-op probs in that time so that ratio doesn't apply to experienced vets doing the op.

Have you had a look at our piggy savvy vets locator to check if one is within your reach, even though the clinic is not quite local? It really pays to travel that bit further for a good neutering vet! Deaths are fairly rare, but rate of post-op complications like abscesses very much depends on the quality of the operating vet and his team.

That's what I thought, but it made me stupidly worried :P

That does help, although all of the vets I rung said that they had done it but not often. I wish I had a really cavy savvy vet near me :(

I looked and the closest is in Maidstone :( None of my family have a car so I'd rely on public transport to get there which is a bit of a trek, especially on the way back with a post-op piggy

It is definately important to find a vet you can trust. I now have two which is fantastic, one a bit further away which is an exoitics vet and a closer cheaper one who I only recently found but seems very clued up.

The vet was my main concern, as obviously that is the crucial factor! I asked my local rescue on the off chance they'd ever had a male guinea pig neutered (they're primarily dogs and cats) and they recommended a vet that's a 20 minute drive away, said they had all of their boars done there! I'd also asked on an animal page on facebook for recommendations and the same vets was mentioned over and over for small mammals, so I know where I'm going now :)

It's also relatively cheap - £68 including painkillers and antibiotics! :D Very happy :)

That's good, good luck when you get him done.

Ginger's neuter cost £79 which included a weeks worth of pain killer and antibiotics, we also got a free post op check too!

However i did have £150 on hand just incase he needed anything in the weeks following, as it's only been two weeks since.

Thankfully the op site is completely healed and he's been fine x

Thank you! Unfortunately though, I'm getting both of my boars neutered so that's going to come to a stinging £136! Then another 2X4 C&C, my bank account is going to be destroyed after this! :D

I'm glad Ginger has recovered well! Having money on hand is also a good idea, I'll do the same just incase :)

I understand your worry I am taking Edward to Alfeton vets a week today to get him neutered and to be honest that's all I can think about. Oh and the cost is £49.98

I really hope it goes smoothly for you and little Edward! I'm sure it will, but fingers crossed anyway :) I know I'm going to be an utter wreck once the appointment is made, probably wait in the waiting room while the procedure is being done!

I hope it goes well!

I'm planning to have my little boar, Wilbur, neutered once he's a little older and I can sympathise with the worry. I'm hoping I'll have plucked up the courage by the time he is six months old in May!

I am sending my husband with him,I will be there to pick him up but can't take him in case I show my self up by weeping in the waiting room!:D

I have had lots of boars neutered as they live in a herd with girls I think the main problem is post operative abscess and I have found that using glue instead of stitches seems to avoid this. My vet charges about £55.The only loss I have had was through an abscess which tracked inwards .However this was before I knew about the antibiotic azithromax which needs a private prescription from the vet,but has worked wonders in abscesses from which have cropped up from bites etc.

Yeah I've seen a few threads on here regarding abscesses after neutering, will keep a very beady eye on area (without it being creepy!)

What do you not understand, will clarify if I can.
i think Lydia is referring to her post where she has a quote from other members but hasnt actually type anything, I assume that was purely accidental rather than an issue with your post Christine :-)

It was, i quoted two responses and replied but the post came up like that for some reason :S

Well I was going to make an appointment for this week/next week for one boar but I've had my confidence knocked again! I saw on facebook that a rescue in my area lost a boar after a neuter this morning, obviously this is very rare as they neuter all their boars but it's almost made me to uncomfortable to go ahead with it!
