Ok, I've only had my two girls 2 weeks, last couple of days pinky has been what I assume is chattering her teeth at my other wee piggy ( almost like vibrating sounds) and now today I noticed this small scab with dry skin and missing fur right next to her nose. Could this be what has caused the change in her temperament, or is that likely to be her asserting her dominance and the two things have nothing to do with each other... Could it just be stress related, do I need to be overly concerned with this, or would this be fairly common. Any help would be great. Thanks

Just read another thread with similar problem.... Could this be fungal nose stripe?...... If you zoom in on the picture it's a little clearer to see. And if so is the Canistan 1% treatment specifically for guinea pigs or is it the stuff you would buy at the pharmacy? Thanks.

Seriously - I can't see a fungal nose stripe on the pic.

From what you describe, it sounds like you are going through normal female dominance issues with chattering and nips. This also suggests Pinky is being pressured into the submissive role which she is not happy about at the moment.

Keep an eye out - if PInky doesn't settle down and accept her role (and/or further blood is drawn) then you may need to reconsider your pairing and split them.

I can see a white scab to the left of the nose but it doesn't look like a fungal nose strip which tends to be in the centre. Is she scratching at all? I also agree that you are going through the usual dominance behaviour.

The scab and flakey skin looks like what Sasspy had on her nose earlier this year in the same position, I would get it checked over by a vet. Sasspy's fungal cleared up within a few days with some Canestan cream

I agree it looks fungal too (just not the nose strip type). I was going to say ringworm but it is difficult to say at this stage and it could well be a completely different type. Definitely a vet visit needed.

That patch by her nose does look fungal. A vet visit should give you somewhere to start as far as treatments go. One of my pigs had a fungal skin infection on her belly and the vet recommended Nizoral shampoo baths (human anti-dandruff shampoo) followed by twice daily Canestan (again, for human use, sold as yeast infection topical cream.) But check with the vet to see what they suggest. As for the teeth chattering, it does sound like normal dominance behavior/rumbling, and not likely connected to the skin infection. HTH a bit! BTW, she's very cute, lilac pigs are my favourite!

Freela, when your vet suggested Nizoral and Canestan, did he/she give you a prescription? I only ask because I have had a problem getting hold of antifungal cream from the chemist because when they asked who it was for, I truthfully said my guinea pig and they refused to sell it to me, saying I needed a prescription from my vet.
