Hello everyone.

I know this is my first post here but I'm hoping you guys might be able to help me. Unfortunately we lost one of the family guinea pig's this morning. Whilst he wasn't exactly young, he'd seemed perfectly healthy this morning so we're all a bit confused as to why he died.

After several hours searching on the internet I've come up with nothing particularly helpful, so I'm hoping that someone more knowledgeable might be able to shed some light on his passing. My apologies if this isn't the right place for this sort of thing, but I figure its got to be worth a try.

I gave him breakfast as usual in the morning and everything seemed fine. When I went to check on him a few hours later, he was lying down rather awkwardly. I picked him up to see if he was okay and he seemed really distressed. He wasn't moving well on one side and was making a very pained but quiet squeaking. Putting him down on the table to give him room didn't help, he kept trying to move but ended up going in circles. He didn't seem to be spatially aware either, he kept running into us. Eventually we got him to lie down and tried to make him comfortable. Sadly 5 minutes later he convulsed a couple of times and passed.

Does anyone know what might have caused this? He was about 4 and never had any health problems up until this point. What I'd really like to know was if he would have suffered at all. We guessed it might have been a stroke but it would be nice to know for sure.

So there you go. If anyone knows what might have happened, any info would be very much appreciated. Thank you, and my apologies once again if this isn't the right place to ask.

R.I.P Scamp. Safe crossing

I'm so sorry, must have been very distressing seeing this happen to your boy :(
I can offer no advice but my theory would be it was a stroke or some kind of neurological issue as I believe this causes the circular movements.
So very sad.

I'm afraid I can't really offer much advise either :( unfortunately, guinea pigs can go downhill very quickly.

As upsetting as it is, it sounds like your piggy past quickly. I am guessing that when you found him, he was already on his way to the bridge so there isn't much else you could have done.

(((hugs ))) xx

Sorry can't offer any advice either. Just wanted to say I am sorry for your loss.

RIP Scamp

I'm so sorry for your loss :(. It does sound typically like a stroke, but it's hard to know. It's sad that it all happened so quickly, but at least he wasn't suffering long.

RIP Scamp :rose

death of pet

do you kno we all seem to ask the question could i hav done more to help your guinea pig alas you did all you could in the circumstances , its hard to see a guinea pig hav a stroke or heart attack , you feel helpless panic but all you can do is cuddle him or her and make it more comfortable for i kno as our gus died a couple of days ago stroke old age , do you kno i hav always been there for him help him when he has been ill brought him out of fits because he pulled a toe nail
off several times he has been ill , i hav being there to treat him we are not vets and hav the type of medicine ready there to treat a guinea pig from having a stroke nine times out of ten it happens when vet is closed,

so do beat urself up you did all you could , i kno i hav done the same myself the last couple of days thinking was there more i can do , but i got the wife to cuddle him to make his passing more easier ,

r,i,p our dear little friend who gave us more happy memories than a person could give we love you Gus grand old age of eight
