Hi all, I've noticed my guinea pig Giuseppe making a cooing type noise like a dove would make while he's in his cage.I'm a bit worried as he's not made it before.Does anyone know what it means?
I've linked a video here( Giuseppes the one on the right)

It sounded like he was very angry because he was Tis cooking at least that's what it sounded like to me but I couldn't sticking up for him eating salad because I'm blind but you sounded pretty pissed off
Correction clicking his teeth

It was a bit hard at first working out the different noises. I'm not sure it was an angry noise, it sounded more like hooting to be honest. Hooting can be a sign of a cold, respiratory infection. Best to tag in a health piggy advisor. @Wiebke

I know you are an experienced piggy owner, but are there any other signs of what's going on like the usual hunched up when an illness is present?
I could be totally wrong, but it definitely sounded hooting like.

@Maddy I know you've had issues with your voice recognition software this weekend, and I'm not sure if this is as a result of that problem or not, but please can you take care not to use swearing or bad language on the forum as we are family friendly and would like to keep things that way. Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. Its funny you mention respitory problem.I actually took Guiseppe to my local vets Friday as when I got bk from work and got him out for a cuddle, he sounded wheezy. He had no runny nose etc but I wanted to be on the safe side.Hes been prescribed septrin and metacam just to be safe.He hasn't showed any signs of pain like being hunched up etc.

I could be wrong but I think hooting could also be a heart indicator problem also.
When mine have had respiratory infection I've been advised to use water vapour to aid breathing. I think a piggy doesn't need to have a runny nose to indicate a cold type infection. Definitely one of the health advisors can give you more information.

Hooting is usually connected with breathing through a somewhat blocked nose, whether that is URI, dust, pollen etc...

Only if hooting is persistent and regular over a longer period of days without any sign of URI or dust/pollen allergy should it be considered as an indicator for a heart potential problem. It is one of these things that make the rounds online and are thrown into the ring far too much and far too quickly.

A runny nose is usually a sign for some irritation in the nose.
URI (upper respiratory tract infection) in guinea pigs is not a viral, but a bacterial infection and generally starts with wheezing or crackly breathing, crusty eyes and nose (yellowish/green), loss of appetite when the breathing becomes more laboured and coughing. Guinea pigs don't get viral colds like we humans have.

It is good that you have had the guinea pig seen promptly. Because URIs can kill, a vet will always err on the side of caution and if in the least of doubts, prescribe antibiotics.

You can see whether a bowl of steaming water next to the cage can help with the breathing. if symptoms persist after the course of antibiotics, you and your vet might want to explore hay dust allergy. Also take into consideration the dryness of the air - has that changed through the onset of indoors heating?

Thanks for your reply. That sounds related to his wheezing then.I will keep an eye on it though.

Sorry, I somehow didn't see all of your post.We don't have central heating so I know that won't be causing it.He does cough sometimes .Is that related to breathing issues?

I didn't just realise until I read that post back but it actually swore actually picks up the wrong words it does not come as my Scottish accent whatsoever
I don't usually swear because I respect that this is a family orientated forum so I want to complain to Apple about how the software has got a mind of it's own
What is that had been an official email or something o dear...

Don't worry Maddy these things happen :) I would imagine voice recognition software has a mind of it's own at times :)

To me it sounds like he has a bit of hay stuck in his throat. Archie makes sounds like that when he has hay stuck, they eventually become a disgusting wheeze until he coughs up the hay. The longest time Archie has had hay stuck is a few hours, so I guess if it doesnt clear after some hours, then itll be something more serious?

See that's why you shouldn't listen to any advice I give...I'm always flippin wrong. Hey but what do I know? I guess I'm just good for throwing money at the forum and sanctuaries.

Over and out.
