Mine used to have burgess excel, either the regular one, or with blackcurrant.

Last weekend I decided to shake it up as they seemed a bit underwhelmed at feeding time. I have mixed up both types of excel, various dried herbs, a small amount of a normal muesli (very small but I'm trying to fatten up my older piggy), readigrass and various dried leaves/flowers.

They LOVE it. I'm not sure why they like it so much together, as bar the muesli they tend to get it all anyway on a daily basis. But since i've mixed it up they've gone mad for food time.

Has/does anyone do it similar way?

Yep rolleyes

Mine get a mix of Wagg Optimum pellets, Wagg Crunch, a little Oxbow pellets & the Dandelion forage from Wilkinson's.

I have some Burgess Blackcurrant & Oregano for them to try next, but have about 2 bags of Optimum to get through first lol!

They get about 5 tablespoons between the three of them each day & never leave a crumb :))

Can I have the recipe PLEASE :)

Hi youthnovels, Please can you give me details, do you mean muesli for people or cereal mix for GP's? and which dried herbs and flower do you use?. I love to be able to "spice" it up a bit for my girls :)

Definitely not human muesli, they mean a mixed food like the Wagg Guinea Crunch etc. :)

I put bowls of Wagg Optimum and Burgess Excel nuggets daily for all of the piggies - some have a little of the Wagg Crunch and Blackcurrant/Oregano pellets.
Think a little of something different keeps the dry food interesting :))
This evening they had some dried parsley stalks and a few FibaFirst sticks in with their hay :(|) Flaked peas are another hit but limit them due to them being fattening I believe :(

mine get a mix of burgess normal/black oregano , tesco muesli, supreme fibafirst and they will get burgess mint mixed in once I buy some

Thanks Poppy's Mum, I'm new and just wanted to be sure, as I'm getting really confused in the area of GP food:{

Are there human foods that you can pick up in the supermarket or even a health food store that GP's can have (apart from veg obviously)? I noticed Guinea Pig Slave mentioned flaked peas, are these the split peas you would put in soup? I can see that there are camomile and marigold flowers in the Burgess forage I feed mine, if I got some dried from a health food shop could I sprinkle them over their nuggets? or some other dried herbs like mint or thyme? can I give them the herbs that are grown in the pot or the packs like at Tesco?

I really wouldn't give them any human type foods, the Burgess forages are made especially for piggies so are safe. The peas safe for them are flaked, not split & are very different for example. Flaked peas can be bought in some pet shops, but they are fattening. Is there any particular reason why you need to make your own food mix up? If you find cost is an issue then I would choose the Wagg Guinea Crunch, it has flaked peas in anyway & no artificial colours so is one of the better mixes, I add Wagg Optimum pellets to mine so they don't selective feed (pick out the best bits like the flaked peas lol)

If you can afford Burgess Excel pellets, or Wagg Optimum pellets they are some of the best dry foods to give, the amount to be fed daily is shown on the bag usually.

Thyme isn't recommended I don't think, they can have coriander daily, just a small sprig. This site shows allowable foods:

If you have a Wilkinsons shop near you they do a Dandelion & green oat forage mine love it & I mix it in their dry food (just a little bit) :

Personally I would steer clear of anything containing sugar or colours, piggies don't need the treats with all the honey or sugar in, give them the odd grape instead as a treat :)

It was just to add a bit of interest for them. The pet food stores around here don't have much to chose from and as I'm at the early stages of getting to know my new piggies treats/bribes are in hot demand :))
I know to stay away from most pet shop "treats", and as I grow a lot of herbs in the garden wondered if there was any of them would provide a natural alternative?

They can have the herbs on the Guinealynx link, some herbs are not good for them. They can have parsley & basil occasionally & coriander more regularly. Do you get Wilkinsons in NI or bags of Burgess herbage? Otherwise you could mix in a little Readigrass which is dried grass & add that to their pellets :)
