I have come across a cavy club close to me. They have piggy contests numerous times a year and i'm curious if anyone on here enters these?

My 3 pigs aren't show quality. I have a white and black dutch with a crest on his head, an agouti with a blaze down his nose and a white belly and a tortie who I think is mixed breed. But, the cavy club also does contests which aren't serious and is open to all pigs, no matter what the standard of pig and has categories like 'the most handsome boar', and 'the cutest juvenile'. I'd love to take Elliot along as he's a real social pig and has 2 grumpy bums at home who don't want to play with him so I think it'll be great for him to mix and for me to meet people in the area as I know no one and i'm a bit lonely at times. Thing is, Elliot isn't entirely tame yet and I wonder if he'd just jump off the judging table :{ He does come over for a tickle with me and is happy to sit in my arms for a cuddle, but with strangers he is jumpy.

Just excited to hear others experiences of showing their piggies :)

Hi Suzy, i'm sorry :red Do you mean that people intentionally buy pigs because of the way they look just so they can show them?

Nope, they breed them. If you're professionally showing, then the majority of the time you're going to be a breeder 'improving your lines' (which is why breeding/showing aren't allowed to be talked about in the forum rules - they usually come together!). You're highly unlikely to come across show-standard pigs in shops because breeders often keep the best ones and sell the 'sub-standard' ones to the shops. I think Tigger and Munchie may have been the result of that, never before have I seen Abbys in that petshop, and whilst they have some good rosettes on them, they're definitely far from perfect! But I love them, so that's all that matters!

That said, I have come across a few people who show their pet pigs in the 'pet' categories and do quite well! I can't see a problem with discussing pet-pig showing (though if I'm wrong here mods can remove my post). If you've got a cute piggy (haven't we all!) then why not show them off!

Oh ghostbusterbunny. That's sad. Do they mate the sow with her brothers/father to make a good show pig? I'm so naive about these things going on.
