like to eat the newspaper that lines the bottom of the hutch/ cage?

It drives me potty! Nice clean hutch and barely a day into it being clean they have pulled up the newspaper, started chewing it and have made a mound of shavings next to it! mallethead

There's some lovely dry food and veg for you to munch on, you can't be that starving that you need to eat the newspaper too!

On second thoughts... maybe it's their idea of interior design rolleyes

This was the sight this morning.

They are due to be cleaned out tomorrow so lets see how long before the newspaper makes an appearance again.

Mine new ones chew thiers. But they are on fleece and they dig under the fleece to have a little munch. They dont eat loads of it but they seem to be not so fussed on thier nuggets and water either.

Ive just decided pigs are strange and do thier own thing regardless of our intentions lol!

The previous pigs i looked after did the same but then i stopped putting the sawdusty stuff on the top and layered it :

Hay
Newspaper
shavings
Newspaper

they seemed to stop as they had floor hay plus thier little hay rack thingie. Sorry i cudnt have been more help

Mine just decided to do it with their newly cleaned out cage. They haven't done it in ages, only once before but they did it this time. There's bits of newspaper everywhere. The little monkeys. In the end I threw in a piece of newspaper for them to play with and eat to stop them ripping up the newspaper bedding.

Ours haven't done it for a while neither. I think they must just have mad spells from time to time. Hopefully after tomorrow when I've cleaned them out and popped in a new hay cake to occupy them for a while the newspaper may stay where it is meant to be. Well....I can always hope ;)

My older girls do it when they want to be cleaned out! They are very good at telling me when this is, accompanied by bar chewing, incessant wheeking and general hooman attention seeking activities! :(|)

I've never used newspaper but I'm sure mine would chew it if I did. I think piggies like paper for some reason.

I was wiping off the water bottle with a kitchen paper towel while the bottle was attached to the hutch and Peanut Butter promptly tore off a piece through the bars and munched on it.

Hazelnut likes chewing on the printer paper when he is sat on the PC desk. I have to give him a little crumpled up piece otherwise he goes looking for it all over the desk and he likes to pee on the modem while searching for paper.

oh blimey my two do it allllll the time.

They are in my front room and all i hear constantly is shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhht as they rip shreds into the paper! Grrrrrrrrr

I know the feeling. Alot of the time they will do it whilst I am sat watching them.
It goes something like this:
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiippppppppppppppppppppppppppp...

Girls are told off...

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiippppppppppppppppppppppppppp...

Paper is flattened back down and covered with new shavings...

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiippppppppppppppppppppppppppp...

OK...I give up... Have it your way mallethead

So far, all mine do with the newspaper lining the hay area is the crossword puzzles inbreeding

I think they like to read it while they do their business in there too.

Sometimes I make hidey tents out of it. They prefer a newspaper shack to more modern housing. One time, it was kind of ironic that they were sleeping there in the newspaper tent, and the story on the paper that was showing was about homeless people living in cardboard and paper.

ha ha arrw bless them. How do you make newspaper tents? is it like origami? this has me intrigued!

A little creative folding, and some well placed clothes pins ;)

sometimes I pin sheet or sections to the cage with clothes pins too, and make little tunnels and such. They aren't very sturdy, and sometimes collapse after piggies explore them a little.

Still, they will poke their nose under a collapsed tent and go lay under it...I get a kick out of the fact that they prefer laying under a couple of sheets of newspaper to all the expensive beds and hideys!

Sometimes, when I put in too many paper tents and tunnels, and the girls mess them all around, the cage kind of starts to look like a recycling bin mallethead Don't tell them that though, they like it that way! more to explore and more places to hide!
