Hello! I am getting two guinea pigs soon and I read that getting hay from a farmer is a really affordable choice, as long as the hay looks and smells nice. I found a farm offering hay for rabbits and guinea pigs for a good price and just picked up a bale today. It smells good and looks green, but I am honestly not 100% sure what to be looking for in terms of good quality. I asked the farmer what type of hay it is, and he said it is "1st cut G2o meadow hay." This is a direct translation from German as I'm in Germany, so I'm not sure if the G2o applies to hay everywhere or not. I know 1st cut meadow hay seems to be alright though. I also attached a picture of the hay just for reference. Thanks! :)

That looks yummy ! if it has a sweet smell, and not a musty smell it will be lovely, try some with your piggies, they tend to be the best judge of hay, eating it !

Looks quite good, as Eileen says the piggies will scoff it down if it's good :P

Is that a cloth bag it's being stored in? That's good :tu:
if it's kept in plastic it will sweat/condensate & go mouldy quickly :(
Try & store it in a cool, dark, dry area to stop fluctuations in temperature to keep it fresher longer too

The smell is the best indicator of good hay, if it's at all dusty it's worth decanting it into a different container to shake any dust off, guineas are prone to respiratory problems if its dusty.
Don't buy any really dusty hay, but a bit settled at the bottom is OK
No idea on the g2 bit though?

Ooh new piggies - exciting :D :luv:
Good luck & feel free to spam us with piggy pics  xx

Looks good to me. The piggies will usually tell you if it’s yummy or not.

I've had hay that smells great and hay that smells of nothing at all and both were welcomed (although the sweet smelling hay causes real excitement!)
The only time I've rejected hay it has smelt really badly of mushrooms... you can just tell it got damp and has gone fungus-y. There was no doubt about the bad smell and I don't have some sort of super-sensitive nose so if you ever get hay like that you will definitely know it!
