Does my piggy have to be in season for breeding?

I've decided to put my girl guinea pig 'Pixel' with my friends guinea pig 'Buttons' to breed (hopefully)! Do I have to wait for my guinea pig to be in season and if so how can I tell when she's in season?
 
Have you got homes for these babies to go to? Do you know how many babies land up at rescues.....
 
I think you are on the wrong forum for this kind of info deary as it is PRO RESCUE and if you dont know your info before you breed then you shouldnt be doing it!
 
There are thousands of pigs in resuces that all need a home, please do not add to the problem. And also as Dazie says this forum is pro rescue.
 
In all fairness, this poster may not have realised that there is a huge problem with unwanted guineas in rescue. If you would like to check out the rescue section and read some of the stories on there Melissa2007, you may understand why this board is so pro-rescue :)
 
Sorry if it's the wrong forum. Yes, homes are waiting for the pups, in fact some will be disapointed unless we get a large litter. I promise not to post here again if it's the wrong forum but 'does' anyone know the answer to the question, does my piggy have to be in season?
 
I would like to point out a large litter for a 1st time mum is likely to to lead to the death of the mother, also she has to be of a certain age to breed.
 
Oh thank you. What age do they need to be? She's a year old so you could have saved my Piggy if that is too young.
 
There are a tremendous amount of baby pigs born of unwanted mother pigs in rescue. Could your potential homes be happy with giving a needy baby pig a loving home instead of adding to the guinea population? Most rescues are overflowing with unwanted guineas because of careless breeding, especially at this time of year. There are rescues who post here from up and down the country. If you need any assistance locating one near to you, we may be able to help?

She is far to old to be breed as her pelvis is now fused.

Your piggy is too old to be bred from now for the first time.

For the people who wanted babies from the litter, how about pointing them in the direction of a rescue so they can adopt some piggies who desperately need a home :)
 
When breeding guinea pigs the first rule which must be obeyed is never to breed from a sow over 10 months of age who has never had a litter before. To do so allows a very high risk of her suffering difficulties with the birth, because as a sow grows older her pelvic bones will become fused together and will be unable to expand easily and allow the passage of the babies through the birth canal, resulting in the babies becoming trapped. This is known as dystocia. Unless a vet is on hand quickly to perform a Caesarean section, both mother and babies will be lost
 
There are loads of cute fluffy babies in resuces all over the UK and there are some even cuter older pigggies, please look at some rescue sites.

Well they are not going to have them, unless you are prepared to put your piggies life at risk....
Please do not breed.
 
Firstly i wouldnt breed from her as she has gone past the age to breed O0 which is around 10 months old 0:)
Rescues have babies in sometimes so why not rescue some unwanted babies and give them to your friends who want pixels babies :smitten:

pelvic bones dont fuse - They become less elasticated which means that it is harder for the babies to pass through the birth canal O0
 
Page 118 in the book The Proper Care Of Guinea Pigs, Peter Gurney uses the word fused... lol, this book is my bible. >:D
 
I have that book lol. My little sister coloured all the guinea pigs in it with Blue pen :( .

Oh well i dont agree with that :P piggies can give birth over a year old so they are not fused together as that would mean no babies would be able to pass through the birth canal :-\ piggies over one years old have more difficulty giving birth and that could be fatal for both babies and sow :'(
 
Yep got to admit, Guineas can give birth over one year but its such a massive risk. I would not for a second consider taking that chance.

They can still give birth after a year but it is recommended before they are so many months old and then it is safe for them to have a litter later but I would not recommending breeding any way.
I just hope she has not already put her piggie with the other piggie coz they come into season about every 16 days.
 
Thanks so much for your advice. If there's the slightest inkling of it being cruel to the mother then it's a big no no.

The great thing is you have asked, which is more than a lot of people do, I know there are rescues up in the peak district, so encourage your friends to go and have a look.
 
so glad you've decided not to breed :) i think your friends wanting a piggie would get so much more pleasure out of rescuing one :smitten:
 
well done not for breeding her :) like the others say, pigs are just waiting for a nice home from a rescue, and you will feel really good inside that you helped give a pig a new life ;)
 
Melissa2007 - babies are in rescues as well alot are born there, so if its babies your friends want point them in the direction of the rescues.

Here is my Romey she is alot bigger now but this is a picture of her as soon as i saw her we fell in love with her. Romey and her sister were both born in Rescue.

Whatever the terminology or technical stuff is - whether the bones are fused or less elasticated - having waited months to get a pregnant rescue guinea, then go through all the stress of waiting for the babies to be born and hoping to god that she'd had babies before, don't do it Melissa2007!

Join here and learn loads, then if you want babies you could get a pregnant rescue when you've got all your info. Believe me, it is STRESSFUL waiting for babies to be born - especially when it's a much loved pet!
 
I agree Jillybean - apart from the tons in rescues, Melissa2007; what would you do/how would you feel if your guinea got really ill or died? and the same for the babies? I could never put mine through that.
