Does my piggy have to be in season for breeding?

I waited until I had space to keep how ever many babies came. The 'baby' boys will be one year next month. It's very sad how many need homes.

Sorry Sokel, but I had to add this :)

Yes, a sow needs to be in 'season' to breed with a boar.

No, the bones don't fuse (Cooper and Schiller), and there is no radiological evidence to suggest they do. But sows over a year are more likely to get tired and need assistance from a vet.

Sows can successfully be bred over a year if they are healthy. Do you know what is healthy for a breeding sow? Many pigs over a year are healthy, but not for breeding.

Do you know what foods she should have and shouldn't have?

Do you know the Protein levels for breeding sows? I don't I'm not a breeder and I lost a sow when I was a breeder, that was enough for me. I brought up 2 pups from day 1 their mum died during a caesarian. I had lots of successful births too but they added to the pet population mostly.

That was 30 years ago and there was no internet for info, no internet for a network of rescues like today.

If you have homes waiting then let us know about them, between us we have 100s of guineas that, through no fault of their own, need a home. There are babies, pregnant sows so there will be more babies available soon, juvenile pigs, old pigs and middle aged pigs.

I loved breeding and getting babies, until it all went wrong. Now I know about all the rescue guins I wouldn't breed or buy from a pet shop :)

Take a look at all pigs needing homes, just a sample.

Thats very good info and i would take all that on board O0

I'm glad you are thinking twice Melissa, and I'm sorry if we came across harshly. It's just when you hear about so many pigs needing homes you realise there is no need to breed. I have two gorgeous girls from Sokel and one would make a wonderful mother, however I'd rather get a little babe to live with my pair then breed her. It's not worth the risk. Even if she was of the right age to breed then there are still things that can go wrong like toxemia which is fatal for pregnant sows.

I hope you've found all the information useful and hope you stick around, this board has helped me a lot to learn about pigs.

There are enough people breeding responsibly and too many breeding irresponsibly to need any more :)
