Does this seem like a lot for a lice/mite treatment?

Ok well the other day I noticed McMac had some dry skin an saw a couple of little creatures in his fur.
Took him to the vets today and I was given Xeno and as she logged it in on the computer screen in the room it said 16 pounds. I was like alright cool that is pretty reasonable for a couple of spot on capsules. I went to the front desk and I was told 28 pounnds @)

Does this seem like a lot? I have no idea why it said 16 pounds and then it ended up being 28 pounds :S I now don't have a lot of money left until I get my next carers allowance.
And I have been needing to get Rosie's vaccination done :( ahh dear

Did you have to pay a consultation fee on top of the £28? Otherwise, the different will have been the consultation fee.

You may have had to pay for the consultation. I think my vet charges me £20 or something for it, but they are very good there.

I guess it must have been split into consultation and treatment. I have never actually been told what the fee is. Is the consultation fee the same? Like is it a set amount or does it change depending on the treatment and animal?

Not sure. I think that at my vets they charge you for the time that you are there. I think the minimum amount is £10 for 30 minutes or something and then I guess you can have a hours consultation too. Does your local vets have a website? It might be worth looking on there as sometimes they advertise their prices.

It should normally be broken down on your receipt for consultation and medication. Sometimes you have to ask for one, but they should really give it to you automatically.

I once took my girls in and they needed some xeno 450 for mites. Got to the desk, nearly £120, I almost died. They charged for 2 consultations as they had taken a while, £17 just to stick some tape to lexi and pop it under the microscope and the rest was the spot on. I did need 18, 3 for each of the 6 pigs but still :x

I used to go to a vet practice that was like that. They were fantastic with small animals, so I put up with it, but I got charged loads for any little thing that they did, and taking 3 piggies with the same condition, I'd still get charged for 3 separate consultations.

When I took my Lola for Mite treatment it cost about £30 each time I went including injections. I had to go 3 times for 3 injections so £90 in total.

When I rescue my next pigs my Fiance is going to put £50 a month into a savings account for vet bills to cover us should we ever have less money later on.

For future reference you can get Xeno Ivermectin a lot cheaper from Animed direct. Although if your vet was charging for a consult too you got off fairly light. Ours is £25 for a consult.
Animed Direct do Xeno 450 ( 6 pipettes) for £16.99 ( free p & p but it takes a few days ) so for monthly preventative treatment I can get 3 months of treatment for 4 pigs out of just two boxes. Which is £2.83 per pig per month ( if I've worked it out right, I have a headache! ).

That sounds a really good idea. :) Especially when it comes to the big things, like operations, lab test fees etc. :(

Where I work (we're pretty pricey but only a couple of £ more than cheaper places), it's like £9 for a single pipette of xeno450, so I think you got off lightly!

I think I would probably order offline if I were to need it again. touch wood I wont but I will keep that website saved :)

Yeah I think I did get off pretty lightly considering what other people have been saying. Wouldn't have been able to afford like 20 pounds for consultation.

We also put £50 to a £100 aside into a savings account each month for vets bills ( and at the moment that's not even coming close to being enough). I don't include the Xeno 450 in that, I just get that as part of my regular online piglet shop.

I just had all three of mine treated for mites with injections (I'm not to sure what the drug was, but I would guess Ivermectin), not spot on, overall it cost £30 for all three, £10 per round of injections. I guess it depends on the vets, and the treatment choices!
