Gah!

Baby Buttercup has a dark patch on her nose/cheek. I spotted it last night and thought mum had snapped at her and caught her (mum puts her in her place but no real fighting) It was small and dry so I though I'd keep an eye on it.

Tonight the patch has got worse and looks like it has oozed a bit. The best way I can describe it is that it looked like she had dark dirt in her hair close to her skin last night. I can also see what looks like another teeny patch on her nose.

Any suggestions? I've been at work and have only had 2 mins with them tonight when I discovered it so haven't checked mum over. I can probably get a pic tomorrow of baby. Can I self treat somehow or do I need to call a vet. I'm guessing she is 7 weeks now. She is fine in herself and has eaten so I have no worries that way.

<worried> :{

Poor thing - though she doesn't seem bothered. Waiting for vets to open though also considering taking her to Cambridge Cavy Trust if they have timeto see her.

Looks like ringworm to me! Thankfully, it is easily treatable; but you should see a vet. http://www.guinealynx.info/fungus.html

Make sure that you always wash your hands thoroughly, as ringworm is not only infectious for piggies but one of the few things that can jump on humans.

Thanks all. Mum was one of Sophie/Teresa's big rescue that had ring worm. Mum had never shown signs and had been with Teresa for a long time. I guess stress might have played a factor with the move/new home/noisy children!

Luckily we always make my daughter wash her hands and I do as well. I'll be concerned about me as I have bad excema on my arms and wrists but will keep an eye out.

Vets at 4pm and taking both.

Thanks again.

It's hard to tell for sure but certainly looks fungal. Ringworm is normally in rings. Either way it should be treated as fungal (although they have been treated to within an inch of their lives for ringworm!).

The vet can tell you if it is def. ringworm or not (although some vets don't know still, as UV isn't 100% accurate). Depending on the vet, they will prescribe Malaseb shampoo. If you can get to Vedra you'd have a clearer diagnosis and she might treat with intrafungal.

Hope she is better soon!

I have to agree that fungal is more commonly seen on the face.

A miconazole/ketoconazole based cream like Daktarin may help, or for a more natural method Gorgeous Guineas sell some useful anti-fungal creams.

Good luck at the vets tonight!

Thank you. Any normal day I would get to Vedra but she is about 40 mins away each way and like children it looks like Guineas decide to get ill when you are at your most manic! I just can't fit much more into my day!

If I'm not happy with what the vets say I'll get a second opinion.

I do have a load of stuff in my bsket for GG's but can't decide whether to order now or wait for diagnosis.

I missed this post this morning but have just seen it - sorry:red

When I picked up baby Saskia for a cuddle this morning she also has what looks like a ringworm patch on her ear. Although Mums never showed any signs and were treated as a precaution I think it is likely that they have passed it on to their babies :(

I'm bathing Saskia in malaseb every 3 days for 2 weeks, and applying canestan cream. Ringworm usually responds well to treatment but this is totally unexpected and I'm really sorry you now have this problem to deal with. As mummy pigs had not shown any signs and their babies appeared to be healthy I assumed, as did my vet when I checked with him, that all would be well.

Hope Buttercup makes a speedy recovery - I'm more than happy to have them both back here to treat if you would like me to.......................

Thanks Teresa. I knew this could be a problem so no worries. I'll **** give you a call for advice. The vet has given me a new treatment but I'd like some advice on whether I shouldbe treating both and what with. Cowslip was chilling out downstairs and i'ma bit suspicious of the parting on her forehead but didn't want to disturb them.

Collecting the treatment later and will call you when I know what it is called. X
