Has anyone ever thought of / use a dog cage. Was thinking about designing a C&C but saw the creats on ebay, all ready built (easy attach an upper level, but looks secure and has a lid, which is what i need.

thanks

lol i actually thought about that as in principal it is just another type of cage...but i have outdoor hutches so didn't go for it, plus it depends on the cage size and security...would you adapt it if you got one?

How many piggies do you have?

I have a dog crate which is 42 inches wide and 27 inches depth and its nearly 36 inches high... THis is for 3 piggies...
I've got a second level in there as well... I popped some lino over the metal base and up the sides as a floor and the piggies love it...
Downstairs is the hay pile and upstairs is the vet bed and hidey house bit...

Not heard of dog crates being used before, ny pics? :))

I dont know why they havent been used! Cant do pictures as no camera...
I find they are more roomier because of the extra depth you get with them... And the height means you can put a complete upper floor in (depending on the light in your house) and not lose light on the ground floor...

Jane28 - What did you use for the second level shelving, and how did you secure it ?

thanks

I did think about useing a dog crate its a great idea as crates come in a good selection of sizes.

It seems quite a good idea but check the dimensions of the grid squares because they are designed for dogs they may be larger and a curious piggy might get his head stuck

Will just check for you I have two crates in the kitchen and a spare grid in the shed. Will also try a standard bottle on the crate bars.:)

I have now checked a grid bar is the same width as the bars on one of my dog crates. The other crate has smaller width between the bars. A standard bottle fitted on both crates. My crates that I use are for smallish dogs I have cavalier king charles spaniels so I would go for a bigger crate if I was to use a crate for piggies.:)

I wouldnt reccommend putting small piggies in them because of the bars... you would need to wait until they are grown...
The bars aren't that big to be honest... That is one thing i looked at and they have been an ok size...
At the moment i have 4 pieces of wood cut to just a bit wider than the depth of the cage... They are tied on each end and go across like floor struts... then i went to B and Q and got them to cut a piece of wood to the size of the inside of the cage and placed it on top (you have to do the floor upside down as the top doesnt lift off so you put the floor in first then the roof struts)... covered that with lino again and vet bed...:)
They are only allowed messy hay downstairs where i can contain it! I am not having them flicking hay everywhere upstairs!

umm i have used one of them for a temporary basis and it is rubbish sawdust gets all on the floor and hay what ever you use because the metal bit at the bottom isnt big enough.
Don't use

Thats why i line mine with lino and make sure the sides go up the bars a bit ;)...
Correx would also be a great idea as people use it for c and c cages already...

I actually just went out this weekend and bought a dog/puppy cage for my guinea pig and he loves it. Better than the store bought cages.

The one I bought he cant get his head stuck in it, it all depends on the type of crate I guess though.

It looks like a reasonable alternative if it works out cheaper than c & c plus correx and is available in a good selection of sizes:)

Its better to get the Savic dog crates... They are the best ones around... You can get them at pets at home and most pet shops and also on Ebay...
I bought mine second hand for £30 for a 40 inch one off the free ads... Worth looking there as well...:)
I really recommend lining the bottom of the cage though, the metal is ok for the base but not for guinea pig useage on its own!
