Hi, apologies if this is the wrong place to post this, I wasn’t sure where else to put it.

As some of you know, in addition to my guinea pigs I also have other pets, including 2 dogs. My dogs, Honey and Kody, have never shown much interest in the piggies when they hear them wheek (through the door) and they aren’t actively trying to get into the pig room anyway, they don’t really care about the pigs. (Of course I still keep them separated and the dogs are never allowed in the pig room - better safe than sorry)

However, I’m going to be moving soon, and I don’t know if I’ll be able to have a dog free room for the pigs the way I do have now (they’re currently in my bedroom as the dogs roam everywhere else in the house). I’d likely put the pigs in the family room, and try to keep the dogs out of course, but the dogs are part of the family and whine when they’re not allowed to join in what everyone is doing (so if we were all in the family room and the dogs weren’t allowed in because of the pigs, it’d kind of be a problem).

So here’s my idea - if I bought two of these tables and put the pig cage on them (as opposed to on the floor) would it be ok to let the dogs in as long as they’re always supervised and never allowed near the pig cage? They usually just sleep during movie nights, etc. which is when we’re mostly going to be in the family room, but again, better safe than sorry. (The dogs would, of course, be shut out of the family room during the night).

Thanks!

How tall are those tables and what kind of dogs do you have?

I don't think there is one simple answer to this question.

The situation and the associated risks can only really be evaluated by yourself. You have to manage it however best suits you and your setup.

My dog at no point ever has access to the guinea pigs as he has a very very. high prey drive. Even the sturdiest of cages on a risen platform won't stop a determined dog. Dogs can also carry bordetella (which is lethal to pigs), even when vaccinated against it (in fact shed it more post vaccination).

Sorry I can't be of more help. I think unless supervised 100% of the time around the pigs, there is no definitive answer. You will have to weigh up the pros/cons and risks.

Also what type of cage will be on top of the table? Will it be enclosed?

Not sure how tall they are, but I'll check as soon as I can. I have a golden retriever and a very timid hound mix.

Oh, I wasn't aware of the bordetella. I'll have to look into that. Thank you!

It will be 3 adjoined Midwest cages (I'm going to have multiple tables all joined together if that makes sense). The cages come with lids/roofs (I've never used the lids but I do have them) so I could make it enclosed, yes.

Thank you everyone for the help! :)
