Dom Falling Over And Struggling To Walk Properly.

Hello all, I'm just about to head to the vet for an emergency 10:20am appointment, I've noticed Dom is struggling to walk and often falls on his front, left and right. It looks like a problem with his front legs, which seemed fine yesterday, but he hasn't been so active lately as well. He isn't whimpering and is eating fine, his feet appear to be normal and his nails are trimmed as usual. So hope he'll be okay!
 
Good luck for Dom and that it is something easily diagnosed. Worth bearing in mind things like inner ear infections can affect balance but hopefully the vet will examine everything! Let us know how he gets on.

Sorry to hear this buddy. My thoughts would be inner ear or neurological. Hoping for positive news from the vets, please let us know how he gets on, I know how much your piggies mean to you they have a wonderful Dad

Thank you @Dindypig, @lauraboara and @sport_billy, I have just got home from the vets, He checked Dom's eyes and ears as his first thoughts was an infection, however these looked all healthy, he said -Dom looks great in himself, but he said there is blood in his urine so he believes it could be a urine infection and prescribed me 10ml of Baytil twice a day, he also said- bring Dom back in a week for a check up and if there is still blood we'll check for bladder stones, He said in the mean time if you have any further worries with Dom just bring him straight in.
 
I've just had put a divider down the cage as Tubby keeps mounting Dom which I would imagine is very uncomfortable for Dom at the moment :(
 
10ml Baytril? Do you mean 1ml?
 
Is he walking okay now? 10ml a day is too high a dose for baytril. It is normally 0.2ml to 0.4ml twice a day.

Please query with the vet a 10ml dose it is far too much
 
Apologies @sport_billy I did explain myself properly, Dom was prescribed a 10ml bottle with two doses of 0.2 to be given each day for a week. Dom has just been separated from Tubby as Tubby keeps mounting Dom.

Dom is just lying down, not very stable on his feet, I am continuously looking over him and i've taken the rest of the week off of work to look after him.
 
It does sound as if Dom is feeling pretty rough. Did the vet discuss/ give you any painkiller for Dom? What weight is Dom today and what is his normal weight?
If he is very wobbly I think u are right to have separated him and you can monitor his poos more easily. What are the poos like?

Okay matey. I panicked a bit at the dose. I would speak to thew vet for some painkiller such as metacam.

If there is no improvement please get him back to a vet ASAP. I have never heard of UTI causing leg issues before... @helen105281 @Adelle any experience or heard of this? Just checked your location and you have an extremely cavy savy vet around 9 mile away

No painkillers mentioned :( I'm thinking now to goto the Camden vet ASAP

Thank you Lee, I'm just thinking how long to wait until I take him, definitely if Dom gets worse thats an absolute given!
 
Good idea to go to Camden as I have not heard of a UTI causing front leg paralysis before. If you could get some Metacam sooner than Thursday thought that may help in the meantime. Did the vet consider a stroke at all?

No, the vet never mentioned that :'( Vet should call me today for the METACAM
 
The Metacam will help with any inflammation. I think the vets may want to do a scan or xray on Thursday.
 
So does that mean you will get some metacam today? I know you say that he is eating well but that can be deceptive because you can't tell how much hay they are eating over the day. Weight and poo output tell you more. I would consider some top up feeds - you could offer him some warm pellet mash in a dish or if not think about syringe feeding - here is the guide to feeding

If he has got a urinary infection, the fluids in the mash / syringe feed would help too
 
Thank you @lauraboara I have some critical care to give him, I'm going to give him his probiotics on a small piece of watermelon to see if he eats it, I'm going to feed him critical care to ensure he's eating, i'll buy some more reliable scales tomorrow morning.
 
Dom's eating Hay and pellets at the moment and he's done a pee, I put puppy pads down to monitor his puddles, I have his painkillers and probiotics on standby for when he finishes munching @helen105281 Vets just phoned to say I can pick up some Metacam...on my way!

Good stuff dude. He is in safe hands with you. I would visit the vet on Thursday, will keep an eye on this thread. Got a soft spot for your boys

Tell them Doms really poorly & can they get him in tonight. Better safe than sorry, also get pain killers. I really wouldn't leave it till he got worse, maybe to late then. I have never head of a UTI causing leg paralysis. Plus you can get pain relief, which is important.

Just given Dom dos Metacam and he's munching on some hay now, I was considering giving him some critical care through a syringe tonight just to make sure.
