The rescue has been dealing with the largest intake of pregnant sows from a hoarding/uncontrolled breeding situation in North Californis (NorCal) gone way out of hand that a single rescues has every taken in - over 400 sows were collected and transported to the rescue in October, which most have had babies in the following two months - that means that in the end over 1100 piggies needed to be medically cared for, fed and found homes!
300 Nor Cal piggies still haven't found theirs. Generous donations have sadly run out while feeding and running cost (for waste disposal for instance - all the bedding needs to go somewhere, too!) are still very much double of what the rescue is normally spending in a week.
You can donate via paypal from all around the world. Every little contribution helps! Please do!

Here is the original text from the director of Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue - a MOST impressive woman:
Sadly we did not raise enough money to be able to see the huge rescue through that we did in Oct last year. We removed and rescued 420 pregnant female piggies from a terrible hoarding situation in NorCAL. 420 sows became over 1100 once they were done having babies. A hectic time that we survived with flying colors! but the money is pretty much finished and we still have over 300 guinea pigs to care for as well as a special needs sanctuary that costs us $7,000 a year to run and takes care of a revolving herd of 40 -50 seniors, sick, disabled and special needs guinea pigs.
We are a no kill shelter, this means we will never euthanize an animal because we do not have enough space or need to make space. We only euthanize upon recommendation with our vet after we have exhausted all other options for a particular animal and it is the kindest thing to do.
The last few months have been beyond hectic, we had to hire extra staff to properly care , feed , clean all these precious mama's and babies. The hay and veggie bills just went through the roof, boy do guinea pigs love their hay! When their story hit the news in October I was so blown away to see all those donations come in, The ASPCA gave us a grant, Small Pet Select stepped up with a $2,500 check and Kaytee and Oxbow send pallets of supplies, water bottles and food! And you kind people blew me away even more with monetary donations and donations of supplies shipped directly to the rescue ranch.
We also became busier than ever providing lifesaving services that include proper care suggestions, in person as well as through social media for many more guinea pigs than we reached before. My dream of a low cost guinea pig teaching clinic is becoming more defined and plans are in the making to make this dream a reality. This is the best way to make an impact and help guinea pigs everywhere by educating veterinarians from all over the world how to properly treat guinea pigs. It is so hard to believe but I dare say that about 85% of veterinarians struggle to provide even basic health care because they were simply not taught enough at vet school. I believe the UK is better but still, 4 yrs of vet school and the young vets spend only 1 day learning about rodents in general, not even focusing on a specific animal. So most guinea pigs worldwide do not stand a chance when they get ill. I want to change this and make a real impact, raise the bar on the care guinea pigs receive.
Can I do it? I am a business women and have won several Stevie Awards over the years including Best Executive, Most Innovative Company, Fastest Growing Company and a few more. Why am I telling you this? Not to gloat or impress anyone, I share this to let you know that I am a pro at getting things off the ground, not too much talk here, but lots of action. I have made it my goal to improve the lives of these darling innocent and helpless animals and am going full steam. I am fundraising right now for general operating costs. It costs a LOT to run a top notch facility dedicated to Guinea Pigs.We have a lot of guinea pigs and guinea pig mouths to feed, cages to clean, dinners to prepare and vet bills to pay. I, Saskia, am not on the payroll. I am the most active volunteer and Director of the organization. My wonderful husband Gabriele is the other most active volunteer dedicating 7 days a week to the care of our charges. He also is not on the payroll and volunteers his time. We do have need of a full time position that is filled by three part timers right now. So other than the bare minimum through the payroll we have tons of volunteers who love this place as much as I do and give their time freely as often as they can.
Our Youtube channel (I was a little late to the game) is finally gaining some traction. I focus on proper care and tons of educational medical videos (some icky ones too). Knowledge is power and I freely share all I know with those who want to hear it! Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue?
Can you help raise money for our general operating costs? Once we have that covered we can take a breath and start focusing on the ambitious clinic plan. We do raise funds though adoptions and some supply sales as well but it sadly falls very short..
Please help me and the wonderful volunteers by donating to the most basic needs of the shelter for the year so that we can go full steam ahead and make the low cost clinic a real thing!
Thank you SO so much everyone – I am truly humbled by the love we have been receiving and the vote of confidence that we will and are doing a great job. Much Love – Saskia and Gabriele Chiesa
Oh - why guinea pigs you ask? Why not guinea pigs!
