Don't Know What Happened - Seizure When Applying Ear Medication?

Basically, I just got Oreo out for his ear drops and he started uncontrollably twitching (jumping slightly) and squealing in pain. He's stopped now and is sitting on my lap looking a but sleepy but otherwise ok. I'm scared to leave him. I don't know what's happened. Any suggestions? If he does it again, I will take him straight to the emergency vet, otherwise I'm thinking vet visit first thing tomorrow.

What should I do for him at the moment?

Also want to add, he is squeaking normally now, as he always does.

He was kind of gasping as if he couldn't breathe, while wheeking in pain. He's sitting as if his stomach is hurting him.

Just read somewhere that ear infections (what Oreo currently has) can cause seizures. Does this sound accurate for Oreo?

Sounds like it could've been a seizure. Was he aware of his surroundings when doing it? keep him on one level tonight incase he has another so he doesn't fall off anything. If there's any bowls of water in the cage- remove them.

I'd definately have him rechecked by a vet, make sure he doesn't have mites which could've started in the ears as that can cause seizures. The drops could be aggravating if it's not the right treatment.

sorry I've not had any experience with this type of problem, but I think pain,severe fungal infections &mites.Can all make guineas seizure. I'd get the vet to check him over again. Also check the drops /meds are suitable for guineas &/or he's not having a bad reaction to them.

My late guinea pig Agent Nibbles had an hour and a half (or longer) long seizure-like episode a few months back. We took him straight tot he vet because it was extremely alarming and we had no idea what was happening.

The vet had no idea what was going on either, as seizures usually don't last that long. How long did Oreo's twitching go on?

Keep an eye on how he carries himself. After Nibbles recovered from his seizure thing, he never walked the same again after that (started slowly losing mobility/feeling in his back legs).

Hopefully what happened to Nibbles is not the case for Oreo. I'd get him to the vet tomorrow for sure, just in case though, that sounds scary!

Just been down to see Oreo and he seems ok. Being his normal self as if it never happened. He was tucking into hay with Pemba, so that's optimistic. I will get my mum to ring the minute the vet opens to book an appointment for today. Unfortunately, I will be out all day at a theme park and I can't get out of it . Should I leave some softened nuggets out for him?

He was on my lap when he had the seizure and I think he was slightly aware I was there as after the seizure he burrow under my neck straight away. I do have a ramp in the cage, but Oreo has never voluntarily used the loft so I'm not concerned about keeping it in. I don't use bowls of water.

He was probably twitching for around 30 seconds to a minute and a half. I'm not entirely sure though, but it was very short.

Ok thank you! Poor Nibbles . Oreo is acting as if it never happened, but I will definitely get him to the exotic specialist today, just in case.

I am surprised he's been prescribed ear drops. I had a piggy arrive here at TEAS with symptoms of ear infection, who had been prescribed ear drops by their vet. The guinea pig was also having seizures when the ear drops were administered. Simon took her off them immediately and prescribed Zithromax for the ear infection. The piggy made a full recovery very quickly.

So I realise I haven't updated as I was out all of Friday and yesterday.

Oreo and Pemba saw the vet on Friday afternoon. I couldn't go unfortunately, but I got a detailed report from my mum. The vet doesn't think Oreo had a full on seizure, but he does believe the medication is the cause. He has been taken off the drops and I think he cleaned Oreo's ears. He said to bring Oreo in for a check up in two weeks, to see if he needs further treatment. I haven't seen any abnormal behaviour from Oreo since, but I will closely monitor him. He is finally gaining some weight back, without syringe feeding, so that is optimistic. Fingers crossed he is ok.
